Dr Matthew Hindson AM (chair), NSW
Dr Matthew Hindson AM is a composer and Senior Lecturer in Composition & Media Technology and Arts Music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. His research interests include Australian music, music for video games (particularly for the Nintendo Entertainment System) and musical composition with Apple’s GarageBand. Matthew studied composition at the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne with Peter Sculthorpe, Eric Gross, Brenton Broadstock and Ross Edwards and his compositional influences range from classicism to the heavy metal band Metallica. One of the most distinctive composers of his generation, Hindson’s pieces are performed regularly both nationally and internationally. He has worked in close collaboration with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Youth Orchestra; has been featured extensively by Musica Viva Australia, the Vale of Glamorgan Festival in Wales and Ballett Schindowski in Germany; and was the Queensland Orchestra's Composer in Residence for 2005. He has co-authored a composition text for senior high school and early tertiary music students called Composition Toolbox, and is Artistic Director of the Aurora Festival of New Music.
Prof Andrew Arthurs, Qld
Prof Andrew Arthurs is currently professor of music and head of music and sound at Queensland University of Technology. He is also an executive member of the Music Council of Australia, a board member of the Brisbane Powerhouse, and a member of the Steering Committee for the National Review of School Music Education. Andrew has composed music for dance, film, television and multi-media. His recent compositions include songs for The Ten Tenors album Larger than Life and Tenology.
George Butrumlis, Vic
George Butrumlis is regarded as one of Australia's finest piano accordionists, proficient in all of the many styles performed on this versatile instrument. He has played with a vast array of groups and artists including The Black Sorrows, Zydeco Jump, Caroline O'Connor and The Three Tenors. He is a regular guest artist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and was soloist in Piazzola's Tango Sensations with the Danceworks company. Along with David Osborne, George was a foundation member of the Raga Dolls.
Anne Gilby, Vic
One of Australia’s outstanding oboists and teachers, Anne studied with Jiri Tancibudek, Leon Goossens, Helmut Winschermann and Maurice Bourgue. She has held the positions of Principal Oboist with the Bremerhaven Orchestra, the Elizabethan Melbourne Orchestra, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra, and has played as guest principal oboist with all major Australian Orchestras, appearing as soloist with many. Anne performs on the modern, classical and baroque oboes as soloist and chamber musician. As an educator, Anne has held appointments as Lecturer at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Head of Woodwind at the Victorian College of the Arts, Lecturer in Ensemble Studies at Monash University’s School of Music-Conservatorium and Acting Head of Woodwind at the University of Melbourne. She devised and implemented the innovative Junior Academy program for the Australian National Academy and the Music Enhancement Program for young classical and jazz musicians for Monash University. Anne has served as Chair of the Artistic Committee of the Australian Youth Orchestra Ltd and was the founding President of the Australasian Double Reed Society, co-hosting the 2004 International Double Reed Society Conference, held in Australia for the first time. Anne’s musical interests cover a diverse range of genres including world music and contemporary music styles. Close associations with jazz musicians as well as opportunities to work with pop and rock artists (ranging from Cliff Richard to Jon Stevens), contribute to her eclectic musical experience.
Kim Mooney (community interest representative), NSW
Following studies in violin and viola, conducting and composition in Sydney, Salzburg and Vienna, Kim's career as a conductor included symphonic and chamber orchestral concerts, opera, operetta and musicals, as well as several recordings for Austrian Radio, whilst based in Europe. Kim was artistic administrator of Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Austria took part in a number of international music festivals, including the Spoleto Music Festivals in Italy and Melbourne, the Wexford Opera Festival in Ireland and the Ossiacher Festival in Austria. Kim is currently the Chief Financial Officer - Asia Pacific Region, for the ACCOR ASIA PACIFIC CORPORATION LTD. He is a member of the Board of Directors for all holding companies, subsidiaries and joint venture companies of the corporation and a Director of the Reef Casino Trust.
Virginia Taylor, ACT
Flautist Virginia Taylor has given recitals in all capital cities of Australia, and performed as a soloist with most of the Symphony Australia orchestras, as well as having been guest Principal Flute for many of these orchestras on numerous occasions. In 1983 she won the National Australian Flute Competition and in 1988 was named Young Performer of the Year by the ABC. Virginia has performed in many chamber music concerts, including performances at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, the Aurora Festival, Christchurch, New Zealand and the Beijing Youth Music Festival. Her collaboration with guitarist Timothy Kain has continued for more than 15 years, and together they have recorded CDs for the Tall Poppies and ABC labels. Their CD For Flute and Guitar TP-003 was listed as a bestselling classical release. Overseas concerts have taken Virginia to the USA, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, India and Saudi Arabia. She has appeared as soloist with many orchestras in China including the Shanghai, Hang Zhou, He-Bei, Guangzhou and Xiamen Symphony Orchestras. 2009 sees Virginia return to China performing as soloist and lecturer at the Beijing Youth Festival. She is also a guest lecturer and performer at many national and international flute and youth music events, working with young people to promote the understanding, interest and further development of music. Virginia was Principal Flute with the Australian Chamber Orchestra for over 10 years. She is Head of Woodwind at the School of Music, Australian National University and Senior Lecturer in Flute, teaching both tertiary and postgraduate students.
Neil Thompson, QLD
Neil is an experienced lawyer and an author. He has a long record of service on arts-related boards. He served as a board member of the Queensland Theatre Orchestra (now known as the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra) from 1982–1990, and as a member on the artistic advisory board for the Brisbane Festival from 1998–2002. Since 2003, he has been chair of the Queensland Choir Board. In 2001, Mr Thompson received a Centenary of Federation Medal for service to the arts.
