Indigenous Australians

The Cultural Engagement Framework celebrates our diversity and creates opportunities for all Australians to participate in our cultural life. It includes:

Indigenous Australians

The Australia Council acknowledges the vibrancy and vitality of Indigenous Australian artists as a key element in the defining and celebrating of Australia. The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy provides the framework for Council’s engagement with Indigenous communities and artists. The policy describes how the principles of respect, authority, rights and responsibilities and diversity can be encouraged.

We recognise that Indigenous people’s opportunities to participate in and enjoy the arts may also be affected by issues relating to youth, disability, cultural diversity and living in regional or remote communities.

We aim to

  • continue to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture
  • continue to consult widely on developing new policies, initiatives and appropriate programs of assistance
  • have all sections of the Australia Council take responsibility to support the professional development of Indigenous artists
  • recognise the rights of Indigenous people to claim, control and enhance their cultural development and cultural maintenance through the arts.

We provide

  • primary [identified] funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts in Australia
  • specific initiatives in Arts Funding and Arts Development divisions of Council
  • promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural protocols throughout the arts
  • opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and artsworkers represent their rights and aspirations.
