Regional and marginalised communities
The Cultural Engagement Framework celebrates our diversity and creates opportunities for all Australians to participate in our cultural life. It includes:
- Indigenous Australians
- People with a disability
- Multicultural Australia
- Young people
- Regional and marginalised communities
Regional and Communities
One-in-three Australians live in regional, rural and remote Australia. For regional communities, issues of funding, infrastructure, education, remoteness and isolation all impact on their ability to access and participate in the arts and to develop and promote their own artistic endeavours. The Australia Council supports regional artists and communities. We support an environment where regionally-based artists have the resources to pursue excellence, where they can contribute to outcomes in their communities that go beyond the art itself. The support builds stronger communities with artists whose work can be appreciated by all Australians.
We recognise that opportunities to participate in and enjoy the arts for people in regional and marginalized communities may also be affected by issues relating to youth, disability, cultural diversity and Aboriginality.
We aim to
- increase access to our programs and initiatives to support artists and communities in regional and rural areas
- ensure that the benefits of arts and culture in community strengthening and building are acknowledged and supported
In addition to funding provided to regional artists and arts organizations by the Australia Council’s annual grants and initiatives, we provide:
- $10 million over four years (2008-2012) to the Creative Communities Partnerships Initiative. This program supports major community arts and cultural development projects which align arts and non-arts partners and have clear outcomes that extend beyond the life of the project
- triennial support to Regional Arts Australia to deliver:
- the biennial Regional Arts Conference of national significance
- benefits for artists living in regional Australia
- arts and cultural development outcomes for regional communities
