Artist Wants A Life - Alice Springs Infuse program
19 April 2012
Artist Camp in the Central Australian Deserts
ARTIST WANTS A LIFE IS a site-specific arts lab presented by Watch This Space, an artist-run initiative in Alice Springs. Ten local and interstate artists will participate, and camp out in the central deserts of the Northern Territory from 20 April to 3 May 2012.
The purpose of the lab is to create a dialogue between regional, remote artists and urban artists, responding to the local site and themes of ‘communication’ and ‘cultural heat’.
The ARTIST WANTS A LIFE artists are Jodie Ahrens, Jesse Cox, Sia Cox, Mel Henderson, Trish Hay, Kelly Lee Hickey, Skye Loneragan, Lizzy Sampson, Claire Wieland and Tessa Zettel. With provocateurs Rebecca Conroy and Lynda Roberts, artists will creatively and critically examine collaboration, and build new artistic relationships.
As Rebecca Conroy explains: ‘Lab environments allow artists to step outside of their creative comfort zones and take a few risks; it's also a rare but necessary opportunity to spend deep slow time marinating in ideas with new collaborators. Particularly those artists you may never have had the chance to work with before because of the tyranny of distance.’
ARTIST WANTS A LIFE takes place near Alice Springs, in a camping location layered with histories. Lynda Roberts describes how the lab ‘will entail working with what we have on hand and what can be found on site – responding to the existing conditions as we find them. Working with this pared-back approach will enable us to focus on process and the drawing out of connections between participants.’
You can meet the ARTIST WANTS A LIFE team on Tuesday 24 April at Watch This Space in Alice Springs. Follow the ARTIST WANTS A LIFE website for updates.
This project has been funded through the Infuse initiative. Infuse supports programs that develop Australian hybrid and interdisciplinary arts practice, particularly in regional areas - see details of the Infuse initiative.
