TOUR GUIDE

18 January 2010

Back to Back Theatre invites audiences to explore truth and reality in this new work developed specifically for public spaces.

The first experimental incarnation of TOUR GUIDE was created in collaboration with Austrian community members and artists from Malaria, SOundSO Theater and Schräge Vägel in Linz, as part of the Linz 09 - European Cultural Capital 09 program.

Like an audio tour at a museum, TOUR GUIDE offers an audience insight to the cultural artifacts of humanity, in this case public life in the Linz Volksgarten in summer. Spectators were treated to a voyeuristic insight into the private conversations of the people in the park.

TOUR GUIDE in Linz consisted of four short stories that aim to fictionalise a real space.

Audience members wore wireless headsets for the outdoor performance and were free to position themselves as they liked in reference to the drama, prompted by sonic and visual clues as to where the narrative would next unfold. The development in Linz was the first time that Back to Back had worked with headphones without wires: the show was delivered via live FM Broadcast.

The audience here was wired into such intense personal drama via headphones, a technique used by Back to Back in their internationally popular Small Metal Objects. The audio guide took us on a voyeuristic journey into a series of intimate moments, many of which were painfully or comically awkward. – Alexandra Crosby, RealTime 2009 - read the full article here
