Inter-Arts

ParkfieldInterventionalEQFieldwork_DVRogersThe Inter-Arts Office focuses on research and development, creative development and experimentation.

We primarily support interdisciplinary art practices through our ongoing Inter-Arts Projects and Residencies grant programs. However, the Inter-Arts Office also manages special non-ongoing initiatives such as the Creative Australia New Art program which supports artists to create major new experimental  work, and the Infuse initiative which supports sector development in regional Australia. Inter-Arts also partners with other boards of the Australia Council to deliver initiatives such as the Indigenous Experimental Art Fund; the Hopscotch live art touring initiative; the AlloSphere Artist Residency at the California NanoSystems Institute; virtual art laboratories with the Australian Centre for Virtual Arts (ACVA); and the Splendid young and emerging artists initiative with the music festival Splendour in the Grass.

Inter-Arts also supports artists working with professionals from other disciplines, mainly through innovative art/science research collaborations as part of the Synapse initiative. Synapse provides Australia Council funding for successful applications to the Australian Research Council, as well as residencies through the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT). The Synapse initiative allows artists to spend significant periods of time in scientific organisations and institutions to develop work in collaboration with scientists.

Artists working in this field are supported primarily through their own contacts and networks in their particular interest area. There is a strong connection between interdisciplinary artists and practice-based research programs in universities, as well as strong international links.

Through Inter-Arts the Australia Council also supported a successful bid to host ISEA (International Symposium of Electronic Art) in Sydney in 2013.

Creative Australia New Art - Creative Development

This Creative Australia initiative supports artists to explore innovative ideas and collaborations to make major new art work. You can apply for $30,000 to develop your art project. This might include honing your plans and concepts, developing a model or prototype, finding partners, and securing other sources of funding. A key outcome of a Creative Development project would be a proposal for the secondary Production & Presentation stage of this initiative.

Applications for New Art Creative Development grants close 1 August 2012. See the application guidelines and selection criteria , and an overview of current New Art projects in creative development. You are encouraged to discuss your New Art proposal ideas with the Australia Council.

Inter-Arts peers

The Inter-Arts Office convenes Assessment Panel Meetings with peer advisors. Inter-Arts peers rate, score and assess applications formally and provide recommendations to the Council on which applications should be approved.

We invite peers for each meeting seeking broad representation of regional knowledge, art form expertise, and experience with interdisciplinary and intercultural practices. Sign up for the Australia Council Peer Registry.
