Inter-Arts Office Sector Plan 2011-2012

Inter-Arts Sector Plan Consultation

Every year the Inter-Arts Office reviews its sector plan to get feedback from artists and practitioners on where they think new opportunities lie for interdisciplinary art. We ask you about our current support for experimental practice, which of our programs are working well and which ones we can improve.

This year, we also invite you to talk to us on-line through Twitter (@interarts, @auscouncilarts and #IAPlan), Google + (Australia Council for the Arts and via this Inter-Arts comments page (see below). We would like to encourage you to join us on any of these platforms over the next few weeks to help us develop our sector plan for 2012-2013.

Although we won’t be able to implement every idea that comes up during the consultation, we would like to keep the conversation as open and blue sky as possible. It’s always good to see a range of both big and small ideas emerging from this area.

As our sector plan only stays vibrant and relevant if we adjust it to the changing landscape around us, we would appreciate your advice and observations on what is shifting in your area of practice. To do so we ask that you consider the following questions:

  • What strengths/unique opportunities do  Inter-Arts programs offer artists exploring new artistic practice?
  • Are there barriers that hinder hybrid art, interdisciplinary practice, research and development and experimentation by artists today?
  • Where are the emerging areas of engagement for this work?
  • What would an ideal environment look like nationally for new artistic practice?
  • What are the first steps in getting there?

Our next online video consultation will take place on Friday 30 March 2012 on Google+ Hangout from 2:30-3:00pm AEST. While only 10 people can be in the Hangout at any given time, throughout the hour people will tune in and out of the conversation. So if you are free at that time, please join us in this space for a conversation.

We will also be tweeting comments and feedback during conversation under the hashtag #IAPlan. If you cannot access the Hangout, please join us on Twitter and feel free to contribute and ask questions. You can also contact us via email to inter-arts@australiacouncil.gov.au

Thanks to everyone up who participated in our recent online consultation Thursday 22 March. You can find out what some people have said so far via our Storify page for the Inter-Arts Sector Plan.

We would love to hear from you and anyone else you think might be able to help us develop a robust, future facing document.

From the Inter-Arts team, a big thank you in advance for your help in developing this new plan.

From @katehunter2009 on #IAPlan (with her permission): . Longer-term strategies that acknowledge the many phases of creation and dev't cross-disc. work requires would be a start. . Strategies that support independent, freelance, proj-to-proj artists who aren't attached to funded co's would also help. . Mentoring opportunities for non-emerging (read older) inter-disc artists exploring new territory. . Links with orgs that can provide in-kind resources:eg theatre spaces with complete blackouts (normal studio space not always approp) . Dialogues about what constitutes'inter-art'. Always technical/multi-media collaborations? Broader conceptual frameworks.

Creative producer assistance across the media arts would be invaluable.. Logistics and thinking into contexts are very particular in this arena - the current push in performative areas is great - but we need something that can extend beyond the purview of the performance - located venue sector - this is a longstanding issue that I look forward to discussing

The sector plan clearly lays out a powerful vision and integrated strategy - the support into inter culture and a network of emerging festivals is really critical and must be applauded. What we lack here in Australia Id suggest is anything that comes close to the weight of the European Festivals - especially in media Arts. Curators here in the broader scale exhibition circuit - which we all want to tap - general shy from the types of work being augmented here - this is a shame - and whilst organisation like experimenta have made strides in popularising - we still remain essentially ghettoised at a number of levels - this is something that some major events integrated into more mainstream visual arts or crossover venues could assist into - and also a national lecture series from some of the big picture thinkers from around the world would be good to see whats out there thinking wise - and again I stress creative production of this work to the world .. has been tried piecemeal by some visionaries over the years - but not yet say in the model of Forma UK - just look at the number of outcomes their artists have notched up - an extraordinary array of global events and venues that many of us may never have even heard of. Its never going to be easy to present difficult or unusual work - and we should never limit ourself to visions of works that can/mist be put in suitcases or that are purely pragmatic for say a wall hanging scenario - that is a death nell! So IA, keep up the great work - I truly believe that your support and advocacy keeps many of us living and working here in Australia. :)

#IAPlan my biggest wish is give support to genuine contemporary artform practice & not tokenistic institutions &/or peoples 'phantom' projects that claim so much more than they actually attempt or do.
