Australia Council to help writers deliver their second book

The Literature Board of the Australia Council for the Arts is pleased to call for applications for Book2, a new grants program for writers who are embarking on their second book.

Between now and 2013, the Literature board will award ten grants of $50,000 to writers who have their second book contracted for publication. The funding can assist with living allowances (including childcare) and/or assistance with travel and research costs associated with the preparation and writing of the work. Writers can apply for assistance towards a specific phase of work, such as research or a final draft; or a combination of activities to occur over a period of up to 12 months.

“Over the past few years a number of first books have won or have been short-listed for major awards,” says Susan Hayes, Australia Council Director of Literature. “At the same time, we know that these writers will not have made a significant financial gain from this early publication. Plus finishing a second book is often a difficult milestone to reach. With the Book2 grants program the Literature Board is welcoming new talent and helping these writers to establish their careers.”

Applications are invited from writers of fiction, literary non-fiction, poetry and play-scripts from writers whose first published work has received a positive critical reception.

Book2 is part of the Australia Council’s Creative Australia Artists Grants program, a five year program of funding which delivers to artists the Federal Government’s budget commitment of $10 million in new funding to the arts.
