The Necks, an improvising jazz trio, have received support in the latest International Pathways funding round.
The Necks is made up of Chris Abrahams (piano), Lloyd Swanton (double bass) and Tony Buck (drums), and together they create long, hypnotic pieces, described by some as ‘Improvised Trance-Jazz’. Since 1987 they have released sixteen albums, have won two ARIA Best Jazz Album awards and three APRA Awards for Most Performed Jazz Composition. The Necks have developed a strong international reputation through their unique and innovative performances, and have toured regularly through Europe and the USA. With the support of International Pathways, The Necks will undertake a five date tour taking in key festivals such as the Molde Jazz Festival in Norway, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and the Nickelsdorf “Konfrontationen” Festival in Austria.
International Pathways supports international touring by Australian musicians performing predominantly original Australian music. It assists with the development of markets and audiences through live performance.
Other artists funded in this round include electronic pop group Strange Talk, trumpeter Peter Knight and experimental four-piece Blank Realm.
A full list of the successful recipients can be found in the meeting assessment report here.
Future guidelines and closing dates for our international touring program are currently being finalised and will be published shortly.
