Campbelltown Arts Centre has been awarded a Graphis Gold Award 2010 for Edge of Elsewhere, a publication produced to accompany the first stage of a major three-year community project for Sydney Festival.

Graphis is an international design organisation based in New York which serves as a platform for acknowledging and promoting outstanding work in graphic design, advertising and photography. Each year Graphis awards a range of prizes which acknowledges the best of international graphic design.

This year Campbelltown Arts Centre submitted for consideration to the prize jury the publication that Campbelltown Arts Centre produced with art direction and design by Suzanne Boccalatte for the Sydney Festival community project Edge of Elsewhere. This award is a significant recognition of the publications that Campbelltown Arts Centre is producing in partnership with both artists and communities. As part of the award Campbelltown Arts Centre will be profiled in the Graphis International Design Journal.

At 144-pages full-colour hardcover, Edge of Elsewhere comprises seven original essays from the curatorial team—Lisa Havilah, Aaron Seeto, and Thomas J. Berghuis—and independent writers Sunil Badami, Farid Farid, Binghui Huangfu and Dr Catriona Moore. The essays cover aspects of the project’s curatorial premise, historical analysis and contemporary perspectives on community engaged arts projects, analysis of featured art works, and perspectives on the cultural landscape of Western Sydney. Interviews with project artists are also presented—Shigeyuki Kihara, Wang Jianwei, and YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES—along with a large quantity of images of art work in the exhibition and documentation of performative works.

Edge of Elsewhere is produced for Sydney Festival by Campbelltown Arts Centre in partnership with 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, and is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, through Community Partnerships and the Visual Arts Board, and the NSW Government through Arts NSW.
