Maddocks Art Prize

Expressions of interest (EOIs) are now open for the 2019 Maddocks Art Prizes: Maddocks NSW/ACT Art Prize & Maddocks VIC Art Prize.
The Prizes give two emerging/early career Australian contemporary visual Artists (one from Victoria and one from New South Wales/ACT) the opportunity to visit the Venice Biennale, regarded as the foremost showcase for contemporary visual arts in the world.
With over 80 national pavilions and satellite exhibitions in venues all over Venice, this is a unique opportunity to experience a wide range of leading contemporary art practice from around the world.
Maddocks is an independent Australian law firm and a long-time supporter of the arts, having proudly been associated with the Australia Council and the artists selected to represent Australia at the Venice Biennale since 2001.

Notification: Applicants will be notified prior to prize presentation events on Thursday 7 March 2019 (Sydney) and Thursday 14 March 2019 (Melbourne).
Who can apply
This EOI is open to emerging contemporary visual artists (all ages) in the first five years of their career. Applicants must:
· be available to travel to Venice for a period of six night between May & November 2019 (exact dates to be negotiated with Maddocks)
· be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia
· be a resident of New South Wales, ACT or Victoria.
Who can’t apply
You can’t apply for a scholarship if:
· you received a grant, or administered a grant, from the Australia Council in the past and that grant has not been satisfactorily acquitted
· you owe money to the Australia Council
The Prizes’ value
Prize winners will receive one return economy airfare to Venice, six nights of accommodation in an apartment provided by Maddocks and $3,000 cash. The total value of each prize is approximately $15,000.
In your EOI please provide a statement (no more than two pages in length) about yourself, outlining your practice and how you would benefit from this opportunity.
Expressions of Interest will be assessed by the Australia Council. The recommended recipient is forwarded to Maddocks who will make the final decision.
The decision of Maddocks is final and no feedback on submissions or further correspondence on decisions will be provided.
Expressions of Interest for the Prizes
EOIs for the Prizes are submitted through our online system. If you are using the system for the first time you will need to register your details to access the expression of interest form.
We do not accept applications submitted via post. Any material received by post will not be assessed and will be returned to the sender. If you think you will have difficulty submitting your application online, please contact the grants team.
As support material for your application, you should provide:
- Current CV – no more than two A4 pages in total
- No more than 10 images of recent work with accompanying captions (including contextual information where required)
- If you have a primarily moving image or sounds based practice, no more than 10 minutes of material.

Our preferred method of receiving support material is via direct URLs. However, if you cannot supply artistic support material via a URL, we will accept written artistic support material uploaded as a PDF with your application.
Individuals, groups or organisations can provide written references or write letters in support of your project. A support letter should explain how the proposed scholarship will benefit the artist. You can include up to five letters of support, with each letter not exceeding one A4 page.
How to apply
To apply for a Prize, click the button below and sign in to your Australia Council account (if you do not already have one, please register for a new account).
Once signed in, click on ‘Grants & Grant Reporting’ and select ‘Expressions of Interest (EOI) – Apply for an expression of interest’ from the drop-down menu. Click the blue button which states ‘Start a new expression of interest (EOI)’.
You will be asked if you are applying as a Group, and Individual or an Organisation. Select ‘Individual’ and then select ‘Maddocks Art Prizes’.
You will then be asked to confirm and/or update your details.
