Dance

The Australia Council supports Australian dance through the dance board, major performing arts board and market development section.

In 2006-07, we provided more than $11.8 million for dance, including more than $3 million through the dance board. This support takes the form of grants to individual artists, financial and operational support to arts organisations, market and audience development initiatives and strategic initiatives to build capacity across the sector.

New work

New work grants support the research, creative development, production, remounting or presentation of dance works by artists or organisations. They aim to encourage artists to take the time to develop a work over the course of its life cycle, and can be used for one or more development stages of the one work. Individual artists, companies and other organisations are welcome to apply.

Amount: $90,000 over two years

Fellowship grants provide individuals who have an outstanding record in dance with the financial support to undertake creative or professional development. This may include strengthening their current practice, seeking new challenges, or testing a new creative direction.

Program – artform development grants provide organisations with funding for programs of activity that develop Australian dance. They are for programs that benefit a range of artists – such as national and international reciprocal partnerships and professional development programs e.g. mentor programs, masterclasses, workshops, international exchanges, management support and peer evaluation.

Key organisations – emerging grants are for outstanding dance organisations that have sustained national or international influence, are leading innovators that extend dance practice, or are acknowledged centres of excellence. They provide a pathway to triennial funding. After receiving these grants for three years, organisations are eligible to apply for multi-year funding. Applicants must discuss their proposals with key organisations staff before submission.

Key organisations – multi-year grants are for outstanding dance organisations that have sustained national or international influence, are leading innovators that extend dance practice or are acknowledged centres of excellence. Only dance organisations already receiving key organisations – triennial grants funding may apply for a grant in 2008.

The 29 major performing arts companies demonstrate the highest artistic standards, an ongoing commitment to developing the artform and artists, a large and increasing audience base, financial viability, and an annual income of more than $1.7 million over the past three years. In dance, these include The Australian Ballet, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Queensland Ballet, Sydney Dance Company and West Australian Ballet. The managing and producing services initiative assists theatre and dance artists to create, present and tour their work. It involves the creation of support structures to produce
and manage innovative works across Australia.

The mobile states initiative provides touring opportunities for contemporary artists and small companies, taking cutting edge arts to audiences around Australia. The initiative aims to facilitate a national discussion about contemporary performance and to foster creative exchange. SCOPE

Securing Career Opportunities and Professional mployment (SCOPE) provides career, pofessional development and education upport for dancers throughout their artistic creers and beyond. It is based on the highly sccessful National Coach and Athlete Career nd Education (NCACE) program that helps eite athletes to develop their careers in sports ad transition into other areas. SPARK

SPARK is a mentoring program that provides young artists aged 18 to 26 with the opportunity to take part in a nine-month mentorship with an established arts professional, sharing ideas, networks and experiences.
