About the grant

The Dance and Music Initiative supports choreographers, dancers, composers and/or musicians to work collaboratively to create and develop innovative, new dance/music work. Priority will be given to proposals that incorporate live musical performance as an integral part in the final presentation of the work.

The intention of the initiative is to encourage new collaborative relationships. The integrity of the collaborative process is an important consideration and applications leading to work where dance and music components contribute equally will be well regarded. Projects may not re-use existing dance or music material and must consist of original music and choreography. Previous recipients (either applicants or key creative partners) of the 2011 Dance and Music Initiative are not eligible to re-apply in 2012. Applicants unsuccessful in the 2011 round are eligible to reapply but we encourage applicants to discuss their application with an appropriate program staff member.

Individual artists, groups and organisations from a wide variety of dance and music practices are encouraged to apply.

As the minimum, an initial staging or development of the proposed new work must take place by 31 December 2013.

Costs

This initiative provides funding of up to $20,000 for creative development costs associated with a new dance/music work. Projects are restricted to the creative development of new work, which includes composition, commissioning, rehearsal, collaboration with other artists, etc. Costs associated with the presentation of the new work are not eligible under this category.

You may apply for professional fees, associated expenses such as on-costs and travel, and a reasonable level of administrative costs. If you wish to claim administrative costs, you should provide a detailed breakdown of these in your project budget.

For applications in which the musical creative process involves the recording of music, costs associated with recording (up to and including the mastering stage) are eligible for funding, but cannot constitute more than 50% of the total of the musical component of the budget.

The application budget provided should only show income and expenditure for the creative development stage of the work.

Information about potential funding avenues for future stages of the work (e.g. presentation) should be discussed within the written component of the application, or attached as a pdf document.
