Infuse - Inter-Arts

Support for interdisciplinary arts development programs across regional areas

An initiative for up to $15,000 for workshop, forum & critical programs
Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis

About the grant

Infuse supports programs that develop Australian hybrid and interdisciplinary arts practice, particularly in areas where there are limited opportunities for artists to network.

Infuse aims to support conceptual and critical development among artists working in interdisciplinary practice, and to foster new relationships between emerging and established artists. This could be workshops, forums, laboratory and critical discussion programs for artists and writers engaging with hybrid arts practice.

Your proposal should include a framework for engaging local artists and new regional connections across arts networks. You should also plan follow-up activities that encourage longer-term contact between participants and support career development.

See Inter-Arts webstories and previous Assessment Meeting Reports for further details about interdisciplinary and hybrid arts projects funded by the Inter-Arts Office.

Eligibility

This category is open to organisations, or groups in partnership with organisations. To be eligible, you must meet the general eligibility requirements.

There are no specific eligibility requirements for the Infuse grant, but you must first contact Inter-Arts staff to discuss your proposal ideas. Unsolicited proposals will not be accepted and only one application per calendar year is permitted to the Infuse initiative.

The Australia Council encourages artists from Indigenous backgrounds and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to submit proposals. Proposals are also encouraged from artists with disabilities and from artists living and working in regional Australia.

Selection criteria

Your application must demonstrate:
  • potential to develop new networks and/or new, longer-term collaborations between artists in urban communities and artists in regional communities
  • potential to build knowledge about conceptual development in interdisciplinary arts and add to the level of critical debate about the practice
  • evidence that the proposal is well planned, viable and has adequate support from other partners.

Selection process

Applications to Inter-Arts funding programs are assessed by peers, who have expertise in interdisciplinary and hybrid arts practices across artforms and regions. Peers provide formal recommendations to Council on which applications should be approved. They review and score applications according to the selection criteria above.

Your online application is processed by Inter-Arts staff and assessed electronically by peers, so all support material must be viewable on laptops or personal computers. It's important to follow the specific guidelines for your application, and to choose appropriate support material examples of your work that show well in this format.

After funding recommendations are confirmed, grant notification emails go out to all applicants and outcomes are published on the Australia Council website. If you are not successful with your application, you can contact Inter-Arts to discuss feedback.

For more information on the assessment process, please see the page on Assessment of applications in the Information for applicants section. If you are interested in being part of the assessment process, you can sign up for the Australia Council Register of Peers.

Supporting materials

Follow these guidelines to ensure your application and support materials are eligible. You must submit all materials by the closing date, including:

  • example of previous work to illustrate your practice and proposal (up to three URL links per application required, see specifications below)
  • curriculum vitae summary of all key artists/artsworkers involved (.pdf, maximum two A4 pages per application)
  • confirmation letters (required) and support letters (optional) to demonstrate the planning and viability of your proposal (.pdf, see details below).
All application and support material will be copied and distributed electronically to the assessment panel members prior to the assessment meeting. Additional files, late or hardcopy support material will not be assessed.

Example of previous work - specifications

Online support material should demonstrate past work by you and/or your collaborators, which is relevant to your proposal for this particular category. You can submit up to three URL links, which should link directly to your support material and demonstrate your work in accessible and engaging ways for the Inter-Arts Assessment Panel. This could include:

  • video or audio files on VIMEO, YouTube or Myspace
  • your project blog or artists’ websites
  • examples of previous projects or reviews of your work
  • information and confirmation letters specific to your application (which you may wish to password-protect).

Confirmation letters

You must submit appropriate documents to demonstrate the planning and viability of your proposal (.pdf format only). This includes letters from:

  • your collaborators confirming their participation in the project
  • your  partner organisations in Australia or overseas
  • the venue or site for the public presentation of your work
  • if your proposal involves community groups, you must provide letters of support confirming the community’s full understanding of the proposal and willingness to work with the nominated personnel
  • if your proposal involves representations of artistic/cultural practice or intended outcomes relating to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists or communities, you must provide letters from relevant communities or artists. You must show clear evidence of support and agreement for the activities undertaken, in line with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts policy and its underpinning principles. In preparing your application, you may wish to consult the Indigenous protocol guides in song, performance, writing, media arts and visual arts.

All confirmation letters must be submitted with your application. The assessment panel will be informed of these confirmations but may not see the letters.

Support letters (optional)

You may also provide support letters from peers in the field, organisations, communities or other people relevant to the project. You can submit up to three different support letters, each up to one A4 page (.pdf). These letters can include comments supporting the application or can more fully describe resources being provided by a third party. For example, a mentor proposed in an application might provide a description of what they can offer and how they see a mentor relationship working.

Inter-Arts Infuse FAQs

What can I apply for?

Organisations can propose critical and conceptual development programs for artists. These might be workshops, laboratories or forum programs which are designed for local artists to develop the concepts and critical language around their  interdisciplinary, hybrid or intercultural arts practices. Infuse projects should enable rigorous discussion of participants' practice and ideas, and enable collaboration and dialogue across regions.

Infuse programs often eventuate in creative development for new projects as later outcomes, but this should not be the focus of the Infuse proposal.

You should clearly map out what what you are proposing to do, and articulate how this is relevant for local artists and in the context of Australian and/or international interdisciplinary arts practice.

How much can I apply for?

You can apply for up to $15,000 for your Infuse proposal, and are encouraged to seek co-funding from other agencies and confirm in-kind support. You must make sure your budget includes appropriate artist fees and that the proposed income and expenditure balances.

Where can the project take place?

Infuse aims to enable interdisciplinary and hybrid artists working regionally to connect and collaborate with urban networks. Your proposal can include artists or partners who are based in metropolitan and/or international centres, but the program should be based regionally and be relevant to local artists and their practice.

Only Australian artists are eligible for funding, so you will need to identify other funding sources to pay participating international artists.
