About the grant
The New Art Presentation & Promotion funding program is open for independent artists, curators and producers who have received a Creative Development grant. This is an invitation-only round, where eligible artists can apply for up to $80,000 to produce and present their New Art project.The Inter-Arts Office invites proposals from artists developing ambitious new work for its New Art Initiative, which includes Creative Development and Presentation & Production grants. This is part of the five-year Creative Australia funding program from the Federal Government.
The Inter-Arts Office encourages New Art Production & Presentation proposals which are ambitious in delivering new experimental art for wider Australian audiences. These projects should intersect with broader cultural activities, which might include:
- Digital culture and creative opportunities for the National Broadband Network
- Indigenous and intercultural collaborations
- Community participation and artistic interventions into public spaces
- Artists working with urban renewal and ecology projects

Eligibility
This is an invitation-only category, open to artists and groups who have received a New Art Creative Development grant the previous year (2011/12). To be eligible, you must meet the general eligibility requirements.
The New Art initiative is open to independent artists, curators and producers working from all artforms, including dance, literature, music, theatre, visual arts, hybrid, digital and interdisciplinary art.
The Australia Council encourages artists from Indigenous backgrounds and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to submit proposals. Proposals are also encouraged from artists with disabilities and from artists living and working in regional Australia.
You can only receive one New Art Creative Development grant and one Production & Presentation grant for your project.
Selection criteria
Your application must demonstrate:- artistic merit and innovation of the proposed new art work
- capacity for significant impact and engagement with wider Australian audiences
- new artistic processes, partnerships and outcomes and their value
- calibre of the artists and other professionals on the project team
- evidence that the proposal is well planned and viable, with appropriate co-funding and support from partners
Selection process
For the New Art Presentation & Production initiative, the Inter-Arts Office will invite online applications from eligible candidates.
The Inter-Arts Office convenes a panel of peers for each assessment meeting, who have expertise in interdisciplinary and hybrid arts practices across artforms and regions. Peers provide formal recommendations to Council on which applications should be approved. This assessment panel will review and score applications according to the selection criteria above.
Your online application is processed by Inter-Arts staff and assessed electronically by peers, so all support material must be viewable on laptops or personal computers. It's important to follow the specific guidelines for your application, and to choose appropriate support material examples of your work that show well in this format.
After the meeting and funding recommendations are confirmed, grant notification emails go out to all applicants and then outcomes are published as a Grant Assessment Report. These reports outline grant recipients, general comments and statistics for the round, the peers and staff at the meeting. Your proposal should outline your vision for the project and explain its implementation, including production and presentation partners, audience development strategies and evaluation. You should also report on your creative development activities, such as collaboration, consultation, partnerships, prototypes and feedback. Supporting materials
Follow these guidelines to ensure your application and support materials are eligible. You must submit all materials by the closing date, including:
- example of previous work to illustrate your practice and proposal (up to three URL links per application required, see specifications below)
- curriculum vitae summary of all key artists/artsworkers involved (.pdf, maximum two A4 pages per application)
- confirmation letters (required) and support letters (optional) to demonstrate the planning and viability of your proposal (.pdf, see details below).
Example of previous work - specifications
Online support material should demonstrate past work by you and/or your collaborators, which is relevant to your proposal for this particular category. You can submit up to three URL links, which should link directly to your support material and demonstrate your work in accessible and engaging ways for the Inter-Arts Assessment Panel. This could include:
- a video or audio file on VIMEO, YouTube or Myspace (up to 5 minutes)
- a page on your project blog or websites which is created for this proposal
- an example of previous projects or reviews of your work
- information and confirmation letters specific to your application (which you may wish to password-protect).
You must submit appropriate documents to demonstrate the planning and viability of your proposal (.pdf format only). This includes letters from:
- your collaborators confirming their participation in the project
- your partner organisations in Australia or overseas
- the venue or site for the public presentation of your work
- if your proposal involves community groups, you must provide letters of support confirming the community’s full understanding of the proposal and willingness to work with the nominated personnel
- if your proposal involves representations of artistic/cultural practice or intended outcomes relating to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists or communities, you must provide letters from relevant communities or artists. You must show clear evidence of support and agreement for the activities undertaken, in line with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts policy and its underpinning principles. In preparing your application, you may wish to consult the Indigenous protocol guides in song, performance, writing, media arts and visual arts.
All confirmation letters must be submitted with your application. The assessment panel will be informed of these confirmations but may not see the letters.
Support letters (optional)
You may also provide support letters from peers in the field, organisations, communities or other people relevant to the project. You can submit up to three different support letters, each up to one A4 page (.pdf). These letters can include comments supporting the application or can more fully describe resources being provided by a third party. For example, a mentor proposed in an application might provide a description of what they can offer and how they see a mentor relationship working.

New Art - Presentation & Production FAQs
What can I apply for?
Having received a New Art - Creative Development grant, you can apply for up to $80,000 to produce and present the work the following year. You should clearly describe the outcomes of the creative development period, the partnerships you have established and their value, and how you will finally realise the new art on a large scale for Australian audiences.
It is up to you to define what is pioneering about your proposal, in terms of experimental practice, artistic risk and connections to broader culture. You should contextualise the creative development and proposed Presentation and Production phase of your project in relation to current Australian and/or international practice, and inspire the peers with your vision and capacity to deliver this work.
Can I apply for international projects?
Yes, however the focus of this initiative is for New Art outcomes in Australia. You can apply for international components of your project, as long as you can demonstrate viable planning and budget. Only Australian artists are eligible for funding, so you will need to identify other funding sources to pay participating international artists.
Should I have production, presentation and funding partners confirmed?
Yes, your application will be more competitive if you can demonstrate the viability and support you have confirmed to successfully produce and present your project in new ways. You should be able to identify the co-funding and partnerships you have secured during the creative development stage of the project.
