About the grant
Inter-Arts Project grants support artists investigating emerging artistic practice through interdisciplinary and hybrid arts. The main focus for this category is to support:
- research and development
- creative development
- production and presentation.
We welcome applications from artists exploring participatory experiences and innovation such as:
- creative agency for audiences, thus blurring the lines between ‘creator’ and ‘viewer’
- intercultural exchange
- live performance in networked environments
- mixed or augmented realities in public spaces.
Project proposals within these areas of interest must be framed in relation to interdisciplinary and hybrid art practice.
Your project can span more than 12 months. Your proposal will be more competitive if you seek additional funding from other sources.
See Inter-Arts webstories and previous Assessment Meeting Reports for further details about interdisciplinary and hybrid arts projects funded by the Inter-Arts Office.

Eligibility
This category is open to artists, groups and organisations. To be eligible, you must meet the general eligibility requirements. There are no specific eligibility requirements for this Inter-Arts Projects grant.
The Australia Council encourages artists from Indigenous backgrounds and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to submit proposals. Proposals are also encouraged from artists with disabilities and from artists living and working in regional Australia.
Selection criteria
Your application must demonstrate:- artistic merit of the proposed activity for interdisciplinary and hybrid arts
- effective hybrid or interdisciplinary approach to the creative process or outcome
- calibre of the artists and other professionals on the project team
- evidence that the proposal is well planned, viable and has appropriate support from project partners and/or other sources.
Selection process
The Inter-Arts Office convenes a panel of peers for each assessment meeting, who have expertise in interdisciplinary and hybrid arts practices across artforms and regions. Peers provide formal recommendations to Council on which applications should be approved. This assessment panel will review and score applications according to the selection criteria above.
Your online application is processed by Inter-Arts staff and assessed electronically by peers, so all support material must be viewable on laptops or personal computers. It's important to follow the specific guidelines for your application, and to choose appropriate support material examples of your work that show well in this format.
After the meeting and funding recommendations are confirmed, grant notification emails go out to all applicants and then outcomes are published as a Grant Assessment Report. These reports outline grant recipients, general comments and statistics for the round, the peers and staff at the meeting. If you are not successful with your grant application, you can find out more about the funding round with this report and contact Inter-Arts to discuss feedback.
For more information on the assessment process, please see the page on Assessment of applications in the Information for applicants section. If you are interested in being part of the assessment process, you can sign up for the Australia Council Register of Peers.

We recommend you also read the general FAQs for all grants and the FAQs for supporting materials submitted with your application.
Inter-Arts Projects FAQs
What can I apply for?
You can apply for funding to support key aspects of the research and development, creative development, and/or presentation and production of your project. You should clearly map out what what you are proposing to do, and articulate how this is experimental, hybrid and relevant in the context of Australian and/or international interdisciplinary arts practice. In grant information we encourage artists to explore participatory experiences and innovation, but it is the selection criteria you must address in in your proposal.
How much can I apply for?
There is no fixed amount for this grant category. You should develop a realistic budget for the stage of the project you are applying for, including funding sources and in-kind support from partners. Your application will be more competitive if your budget includes co-funding from other agencies and confirmed in-kind support. You must make sure your budget includes appropriate artist fees and that the proposed income and expenditure balances. In general, successful grants to Inter-Arts Projects are around $15,000.
Can I apply for international projects?
Yes, as long as you can demonstrate viable planning and budget for the project abroad. Only Australian artists are eligible for funding, so you will need to identify other funding sources to pay participating international artists. It is a good idea to contexualise overseas proposals in terms of its international significance, and the short and long-term benefits of this for you as well as the Australian arts scene.
