About the grant

Artists working in interdisciplinary and hybrid arts are invited to develop proposals for professional development residencies in Australia or internationally.

Your proposal should outline how you will work in collaboration with the residency host to experiment and develop your arts practice. Applications are encouraged from artists in all states and territories. Residencies can take place nationally or internationally, but should be three months or more, within the funding constraints of the program.

Eligibility

This category is open to artists and groups. To be eligible, you must meet the general eligibility requirements and any specific eligibility requirements for this specific grant. 

If you have received an Inter-Arts Residency grant in the last 2 years you are ineligible to apply.

The Australia Council encourages artists from Indigenous backgrounds and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to submit proposals. Proposals are also encouraged from artists with disabilities and from artists living and working in regional Australia. 

 

Selection criteria

Your application must demonstrate:

  • artistic calibre (primarily assessed on the basis of examples of previous work and artist CV)
  • potential for the residency to contribute to your professional development and work in interdisciplinary and hybrid arts
  • effective approach to new collaboration and artistic risk to extend your practice 
  • evidence that your project proposed for the residency period is well planned and achievable.

 

Selection process

The Inter-Arts Office convenes a panel of peers for each assessment meeting, who have expertise in interdisciplinary and hybrid arts practices across artforms and regions. Peers provide formal recommendations to Council on which applications should be approved. This assessment panel will review and score applications according to the selection criteria above.

Your online application is processed by Inter-Arts staff and assessed electronically by peers, so all support material must be viewable on laptops or personal computers. It's important to follow the specific guidelines for your application, and to choose appropriate support material examples of your work that show well in this format.

After the meeting and funding recommendations are confirmed, grant notification emails go out to all applicants and then outcomes are published as a Grant Assessment Report. These reports outline grant recipients, general comments and statistics for the round, the peers and staff at the meeting. Supporting materials

Follow these guidelines to ensure your application and support materials are eligible. You must submit all materials by the closing date, including:  

  • example of previous work to illustrate your practice and proposal (only one item per application required, see specifications below)
  • curriculum vitae summary of all key artists/artsworkers involved (.pdf, maximum two A4 pages per application)
  • confirmation letters (required) and support letters (optional) to demonstrate the planning and viability of your proposal (.pdf, see details below). 

Example of previous work - specifications

Your support material demonstrates your past and current art work, and should be relevant to your proposal for this particular category. You must submit one type of support material, either:
  • one video file up to five minutes only - standard H264 QuickTime (.mov), MPEG (.mp4) or Windows Media (.wmv) format only; 720x576 pixels; small file size (10MB recommended and no more than 70MB); OR
  • one link to support material (a live URL link which is relevant and accessible - eg. up to 5 minutes of Vimeo/Youtube audiovisual material, or blog spaces which are created specifically for this application. This link must be saved in a .pdf document and uploaded with your application); OR
  • one audio file up to five minutes only - MPEG (.mp3 format 192 kbps); OR
  • five images - JPEG (.jpg - no larger than 1MB per image); OR
  • five A4 pages of text (.pdf).
All support material files should be small enough to upload with your application. 

We recommend you submit all support material online. However, if this not feasible you can send your video or audio file to us on a non-authored disc, accompanied by the support material summary printed from your online application. Your video file must be small (no more than 70MB), in standard format and of suitable quality and compatibility for viewing on PC and Mac screens (see further details in support material FAQs). Mailed items must be postmarked no later than the closing date. 

Authored DVDs will not be accepted as support material.

All application and support material will be copied and distributed electronically to the assessment panel members prior to the assessment meeting. You must follow these support material guidelines, otherwise your application will not be eligible for assessment.

Confirmation letters

You must submit appropriate documents to demonstrate the planning and viability of your proposal (.pdf format only). This includes letters from:

  • your collaborators confirming their participation in the project 
  • your  partner organisations in Australia or overseas
  • the venue or site for the public presentation of your work
  • if your proposal involves community groups, you must provide letters of support confirming the community’s full understanding of the proposal and willingness to work with the nominated personnel
  • if your proposal involves representations of artistic/cultural practice or intended outcomes relating to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists or communities, you must provide letters from relevant communities or artists. You must show clear evidence of support and agreement for the activities undertaken, in line with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts policy and its underpinning principles. In preparing your application, you may wish to consult the Indigenous protocol guides in song, performance, writing, media arts and visual arts. 

All confirmation letters must be submitted with your application. The assessment panel will be informed of these confirmations but may not see the letters.

Support letters (optional)

You may also provide support letters from peers in the field, organisations, communities or other people relevant to the project. You can submit up to three different support letters, each up to one A4 page (.pdf). These letters can include comments supporting the application or can more fully describe resources being provided by a third party. For example, a mentor proposed in an application might provide a description of what they can offer and how they see a mentor relationship working.

Inter-Arts Residencies FAQs

What can I apply for?

$20,000 to support your residency, including artist fees, travel and production costs. Your application should describe a residency program of artistic risk-taking and collaboration with your residency host over 3 months or more. You should outline how this residency will be supported with necessary access to space and expertise, resources and equipment.

Can I apply for an overseas residency? 

Yes, as long as you can demonstrate viable planning and budget for the residency period abroad. It is a good idea to contexualise overseas proposals in terms of its international significance, and the short and long-term benefits of this for you as well as the Australian arts scene.

Do I need to have exhibition or performance outcomes lined up for my residency?

No, this grant programs aims to support artists to take substantial time to collaborate, take artistic risks and develop their practice. Applicants should define a clear rationale for why the proposed residency is a significant opportunity for creative and professional development. If your proposal is focused around short-term or specific outcomes it may be more suitable as an application to the Inter-Arts Projects or other grant rounds.
