About the Award

The Ros Bower Award honours an artist or arts worker with a proven record of high achievement in the field of community arts and cultural development.

Community Partnerships and the Ros Bower Memorial Trust offers the Ros Bower Award, worth $50,000.

This award recognises distinguished effort in fostering and furthering the philosophies and principles espoused by Rosalie (Ros) Bower, founding director of the former Community Arts Board of the Australia Council.

This is an annual award made to an individual artist or arts worker and the Community Partnerships Committee does not require the nominee to specify how the award will be spent.

An artist may only be awarded the Ros Bower Award once in their lifetime.

Eligibility

Nominations will be accepted from organisations and individuals.

Artists or arts workers may not nominate themselves.

Awards are not given posthumously. 

Selection criteria

In selecting a nominee to honour with this award the Community Partnerships Committee, assisted by the Ros Bower Memorial Trust, will take the following into account:

  • Sustained commitment and dedication to community arts and cultural development
  • Artistic leadership
  • A substantial body of work which has resulted in an improved quality of life in a particular community or communities; and
  • Innovative contribution to extending the range and scope of community arts and cultural development.

The award is not project based and, therefore, is not given to assist any particular project, program or intended activity.

Selection process

The Community Partnerships Committee will assess applications according to the selection criteria above.

How to apply

Online nominations are not available for the Ros Bower Award.

A hard copy nomination must be submitted.

Supporting materials

Nominations should comprise of the following:

  • A nomination form
  • A letter from the nominator explaining the reasons for their nomination relating to the selection criteria (maximum of 5 pages)
  • Letters of support (maximum of 5 pages)
  • The nominee’s curriculum vitae (maximum of 5 pages)

Total written material including support letters must not exceed 15 pages

In addition to the above letters of support and information about the nominee, applicants must submit any two of the following:

  • Up to 10 still images
  • 8 minutes of audio / visual material
  • 5 pages of publication / written material
  • Up to three live website links (URL). These must be embedded in to a word or pdf document

Please provide a brief explanation of how the support material is relevant to the nominee’s past work and ensure that all supporting material is clearly labeled
