About the grant
The professional development activities supported by the Dance Board can include self-organised residencies, mentorships, participation in skills development programs or workshops and research projects. Your project may span more than 12 months.
This initiative is open to dance artists at any stage of their career.
This grant is offered a part of the Dance Board’s 3 year Western Australia Contemporary Dance Initiative. The aim of this Initiative is to help develop the contemporary dance sector in Western Australia. The Initiative aims to build on existing activity and funding in the sector.
Applicants to this category are also encouraged to apply to the Dance Board’s open grant categories of Projects – Creative Development, Projects – Presentation, and Fellowships where relevant.
Our aim is to encourage a WA based dance artist to undertake a program of professional development that will help them to achieve their career aspirations.
Applicants can apply for up to $20,000.

Eligibility
This category is open to individuals only. To be eligible, the main applicant must be a WA resident.
The Australia Council encourages artists from Indigenous backgrounds and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to submit proposals. Proposals are also encouraged from artists with disabilities and from artists living and working in regional Australia.
Selection criteria
Your application must demonstrate:
• A high degree of artistic merit in the applicant’s work to date
• The potential for the project to contribute to the applicant’s professional development
Selection process
An assessment panel will assess applications according to the selection criteria above. The outcomes will be published as a Grant Assessment Report.

After submission you may provide updated confirmation (eg funding confirmations, venue/ touring confirmation) however, this must be received at least two weeks before the assessment meeting. Support materials supplied in addition to these requirements will not be considered in the assessment of your application. If you need assistance in determining the support material you are required to submit or when it must be submitted, please contact the listed Australia Council team member.
Moving Image Support Material
- It is compulsory to provide moving image support material. Without this, your application will be made ineligible. From 2012 the Dance Board accepts links to material on vimeo only. Hardcopy DVD’s or material on alternate sites will not be accepted.
- Material must not exceed 15 mins
- Material must be downloadable from the vimeo site
- You may password protect your material for confidentiality
- Work should be recent and relevant and should demonstrate the breadth of the applicants work. We recommend you include an unedited section from rehearsal or performance
- A media form must be included, detailing the relevance of the support material to the current application
- Vimeo link and password must be pasted on to the media form
- If moving image file is less than 15 mins you may also add media from other sources, including audio, text or multimedia material.
Accepted Formats
In response to feedback from applicants and to streamline internal processes, the Dance Board will now only accept support material via link to vimeo. For information on how to use vimeo please access this how to document.
Budgets
Applicants can apply for up to $20,000.

Yes, f you meet the general eligibility criteria you can receive a grant from this initiative and apply to the Dance Board’s Fellowship category.
I am an established artist, are there other avenues of support available at the Australia Council?
Yes, you could also consider an application Creative Australia Fellowships - http://www.australiacouncil.gov.au/grants/grants/2012/creativeaustralia-fellowships-established-artists.
I am an emerging artist, should I apply?
Artists can apply to this initiative at any stage of their career. However, if you are a recent creative arts graduate you should also consider our Artstart grants. Artstart is a grant for up to $10,000 for services, resources, skills development and equipment to help develop a sustainable arts career. Does this application count towards the two applications a calendar year that I can submit to the Dance Board?
No it does not as it is considered to be a short term initiative.
