The Visual Arts Board in partnership with the Inter-arts Office is offering a limited number of grants to Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs), as part of the Australian Government’s Opportunities for Young and Emerging Artists program.

The purpose of the grant is to assist ARIs to present projects which develop the professional skills and/or networks for young and emerging artists.

Preference will be given to applications that include cross-artform/ interdisciplinary and collaborative projects.
Projects may include:

  • residencies
  • mentorships
  • exchanges
  • forums
  • exhibitions
  • publications
  • sound art
  • media art
  • performance/live art

The Board also encourages projects that involve collaborations with other ARIs.

ARIs can apply for up to $20,000. However Victorian ARIs can apply for up to $25,000.  Increased funding for Victorian ARIs is part of the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, State and Territory Governments.

The Australia Council encourages the payment of artist fees. It is recommended that the National Association of Visual Arts (NAVA) fee schedule is used as a guide (www.visualarts.net.au).

This grant is open to ARIs only.

The Visual Arts Board will not redress errors in applications. If an application is deemed ineligible, it will not be assessed.

Your application will be considered ineligible, if:

  • You do not meet the general eligibility requirements  
  • You have not included all the required information and support material specified for the category to which you are applying.

What is an ARI?

An ARI can take many forms but typically has some of these key factors:

  • it is managed by artists
  • operates on a non-profit basis
  • has a continuing program of activities

Who is a young and emerging artist?

The Australia Council defines ‘young and emerging’ artists as professional, practising artists who are in the early stages of their career. This can be understood as an artist in the first five years of their professional practice, who is generally aged 30 years and under.

The focus of this initiative is young and emerging artists and applications should reflect this.

Applications will be selected that best demonstrate:

  • Potential for the project to deliver cross-artform collaboration opportunities to young and emerging artists
  • Potential for the project to develop young and emerging artists’ professional networks/skills and experience


For your application to be eligible for assessment, you must include the following required support material with your application by the closing date:

  • No more than four A4 pages in total containing short curricula vitae for each participating artist and/or project personnel.

ALL applicants must ALSO submit ONE of the following:

Images

20 images uploaded OR posted on a non-rewritable CD ROM

  • In PowerPoint template (or create own with a black background to each slide)
  • One image per slide
  • Maximum image size 1024 x 768 pixels
  • Do not include text in presentation

PLUS a one page image list with titles, date, dimensions only.

OR

For projects involving video and moving image

  • A two-minute show reel (.mp4 or Quicktime .mov files only) uploaded OR posted on a high-quality non-authored DVD (up to 100mb)

PLUS explanatory text of up to 250 words as a separate document (.pdf)

OR

For web-based projects only

  • A CD or DVD with a recorded navigational path of the URL a two-minute single-track show reel.

PLUS explanatory text of up to 250 words as a separate document (.pdf)

NOTE: No live links to URLs or authored DVDs will be accepted.

OR

For writing projects

  • A sample of writing. Two pages per writer.

In line with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts policy and its principles, the Australia Council requires that applications for projects containing representations of artistic/ cultural practice or intended outcomes relating to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists or communities must provide letters from relevant communities or artists. Letters must show clear evidence of support and agreement for the activities undertaken. In preparing your application, you may wish to consult Indigenous protocol guides in song, performance, writing, media arts and visual arts.
