Cultural Leadership Program Development (open to organisations)
Closing date: 10 November 2010
Decisions advised: Feb 2011
Projects may start: 1 March 2011
In 2010, the Theatre Boards skills and artform development categories will be focused on the development and strengthening of leadership capacity within the theatre sector.
Cultural Leadership Skills grants will support individuals to undertake programs that develop leadership skills and experiences within their chosen areas of practice.
Cultural Leadership Program grants will support organisations to deliver activities and programs that target the development of leadership skills, and the distribution of leadership, within the theatre sector.
Cultural Leadership - inspiring, building, sustaining
A cultural leader is the driving force behind the creation and pursuit of a set of artistic, organisational or sector goals. Developing cultural leadership skills is about building an individual or organisations capacity to:
- Effectively lead colleagues and/or sector areas through extended periods of experimentation and growth
- To think and work strategically toward long-term goals
- To manage, motivate and inspire colleagues
- To develop fortitude and problem-solving skills in the face of adversity
- To be financially resourceful and responsible
- To understand, analyse and respond to the complexities of the Australian theatre scene and its relationship with broader communities.
Cultural Leadership can be distributed within the Theatre sector by:
- Leaders (individuals or collectives) sharing their leadership skills with other potential leaders
- Leaders empowering others to share their leadership responsibilities
- Individuals or organisations identifying and brokering leadership opportunities for the sector.
The purpose of the Cultural Leadership Program Development (open to organisations) grants is to support organisations to develop activities, programs or initiatives that develop leadership capacity within the theatre sector. Organisations are invited to propose program ideas that will result in substantial benefits for artists, through targeting the development and distribution of leadership skills.
Initial application to this category is through expression of interest.
Proposals can only be developed in collaboration with the Director, Theatre, who will determine whether your proposal will be referred to the Theatre Board.
This category is for any area of theatre practice, but the following points should be considered:
- Programs may develop individuals (no less than three individuals), or seek to address leadership issues within the theatre sector as a whole
- Organisations may propose the development of leadership programs for other organisations. For example: a company that is a leader in a specialised field of practice, might develop a program that mentors/empowers other companies to provide greater leadership in these areas
- Proposals from non-arts organisations may be considered. Non-arts organisations must demonstrate they are in a position to offer artists exceptional leadership development opportunities that could not be delivered by arts organisations. Evidence of potential partnerships with arts entities is desirable
- Proposals which aim to develop theatre leadership in a significant and sustainable way, and that demonstrate the potential for ongoing impact, will be highly regarded
- Programs should not replicate existing Theatre Board initiatives
- This category does not fund the creation of work.
The Theatre Board is particularly interested in supporting diversity in leadership, and developing areas where leadership capacity is under-developed or fragile. You may wish to refer to the Australia Council's cultural engagement framework, which encompasses eight strategies that reflect our commitment to creating opportunities for all Australians to participate in our cultural life.
Organisations may apply for up to $40,000 in this category, but will be expected to bring considerable resources of their own to their proposed program.
Eligibility
Organisations only may apply for Cultural Leadership Program Development.
Applications from Individuals will be considered, if they are partnering with an organisation. Theatre Board funded Key Organisations, Program Presenter and Youth Program entities may apply to this category, but an application will count toward the two allowed per year across Council.
You must also meet the general eligibility requirements.
Selection criteria
Interested organisations should contact the Theatre Director at least 8 weeks before the closing date to express interest. Applications can be made online and are by invitation only. Final proposals will be limited to six pages including biographies.
Applications presented to the Theatre Board must meet the following selection criteria:
- An artistic rationale for the activity as a vital contribution to the development of high quality contemporary theatre, including potential to strengthen leadership capacity within the sector
- Artistic or professional skills appropriate to the activity
- Contribution to the diversity of Australian theatre
- Good planning and effective use of resources.
Applicants whose proposals are presented to the Board, will need to submit evidence of their eligibility, and support material relevant to their application.
As proposals are developed collaboratively, support material requirements will be discussed individually.
