The Don Banks Music Award is to publicly honour a senior artist of distinction who has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to music in Australia. It is worth $60,000.
The Don Banks Music Award was established in honour of Don Banks, Australian composer, performer and the first Chair of the Music Board. Nominations for music artists, including performers and composers from all areas of music, are invited.
The Don Banks Music Award is granted only once in an artist’s lifetime.
The award is intended for artists 50 years and over. Nominations will be accepted from individuals and arts organisations. Artists may not nominate themselves.
Please note that nominations may not be lodged online and must be provided in hard copy at the closing date.
The nominee must be an individual artist of distinction who has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to music in Australia.
Nominations should comprise:
- A letter from the nominator explaining the reason for the nomination (related to the purpose of the award)
- The nominated artist’s curriculum vitae
- The nominated artist’s contact details (street and postal address, work and home telephone numbers)
- Letters of support and testimonials from experts/artists/educators in the specified areas of artform practice, relevant communities or organisations (no more than 5 pages in total).
Nominations may also include a selection of relevant supporting material:
- Up to a total of 10 minutes of audio material submitted in hard copy as a single audio CD or
- Up to a total of 10 minutes of audio visual material, to be submitted only in hard copy as three identical DVDs or data discs or
- Up to three URLs linking to audio or visual material.
Online applications are not available for Don Banks Music Award.

The Music Board does not accept notated scores or video cassettes and will not assess them if provided.
