The Australia Council’s market development section aims to create more demand for Australian contemporary arts through supporting the promotion of Australian contemporary arts and the development of new markets and audiences, in Australia and internationally.

Focus markets

Market Development will co-ordinate an Australian presence at the following international performing arts markets in 2010 and 2011 to increase international touring opportunities for Australian contemporary performing arts:

  • WAA: Western Arts Alliance Conference: 30 August – 3 September 2010, Long Beach, California, USA (including a booth, delegation and promotional activities).
  • PAMS: Performing Arts Market Seoul: October 2010, Seoul, SOUTH KOREA (including a delegation and promotional activities).
  • IPAY: International Performing Arts for Youth Showcase, January 2011, USA (including a booth, delegation and promotional activities).

We will update the list of markets where market development coordinates an Australian presence each financial year to respond to market changes and sector priorities. Increasingly, market development will explore key international festivals in addition to traditional performing arts markets.

IETM

We support an Australian presence at the International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts’ (IETM) Spring (15-18 April) and Autumn (October/November) plenary meetings in 2010. IETM meetings do not operate like performing arts markets such as WAA and PAMS. Their aim is to bring performing arts professionals together to exchange ideas and to build networks and relationships.

Australians attending the IETM meetings will be supported by David Pledger in his new role as Project Director, IETM – Australia Council collaboration project. David’s role is to facilitate increased activity between the IETM network and the Australian performing artists sector. He will be based at IETM’s head office in Brussels from late 2009. For further details contact David Pledger at david.pledger@ietm.org

Other markets

There are numerous international performing arts markets staged throughout the year. Market development will respond to travel requests for other key international performing arts markets where applicants have an existing relationship to the market. Travel support for these market events is available on a case-by-case basis, tied to the assessment criteria and available resources. Please contact market development staff before sending in your application. Application deadlines are the same as the deadlines for the focus markets and IETM meetings.

Please refer to the OzArts Directory for details of other international performing arts markets: www.ozarts.com.au

Australian independent producers, tour managers and/or company and artist representatives can apply for travel support to a maximum of AU$4,000 per event.

Please note this is a contribution to travel costs and actual costs may exceed the amount supported by the fund. It is expected applicants have the resources to cover any shortfall.

Applicants who have limited experience in international touring will need to demonstrate they have the infrastructure to respond to any outcomes from their travel.

Please note that companies and artists who have secured showcase opportunities at WAA, PAMS and IPAY should contact market development staff to discuss possible funding opportunities.

To apply for travel support to attend focus markets (WAA, IPAY and PAMS) applicants must submit four (4) copies of the following:

  • Signed application form (attached to these guidelines).
  • A statement of claims against the following assessment criteria:

a) The impact attendance at the market will have on developing future international touring opportunities for the company, artist and/or work(s) represented.
Please include: (i) a brief market development strategy for the target market outlining the relevance of the company and/or work within this market; and, (ii) details on the type of venue, festival or promoter targeted, demonstrating knowledge of the market and/or existing relationship to the market.

b) The export-readiness of the company or artist and the capacity to follow up opportunities resulting from attendance at the market. Applicants who have limited experience in international touring will need to demonstrate that they have the infrastructure to respond to any outcomes as a result of attendance at the market.

  • One (1) copy of your promotional pack including materials specific to the work(s) promoted at the market.

To apply for travel support to attend the IETM’s Spring or Autumn plenary meetings, applicants must submit four (4) copies of the following:

  • Signed application form (attached to these guidelines)
  • A statement of claims against the following assessment criteria:

a) The impact attendance at the meeting will have on developing networks for the company, artist and/or work(s) represented

b) A brief market development strategy and rationale for attending the meeting.

To apply for travel support to attend other markets, applicants should contact market development staff to discuss their application requirements.

Assessment of applications and deadlines

Australia Council staff review travel requests against the assessment criteria above. In addition, market development will invite one or two key programmers from the sector to join delegations to increase visibility, audience knowledge and appreciation of Australian contemporary performing arts.

While your application may meet the stated assessment criteria, you are not guaranteed travel support. Support from this travel fund rests on the merits of the proposal against the stated assessment criteria in competition with other applicants and available resources.

There are three (3) application deadlines:

  • 5 February 2010 - IETM Spring plenary meeting and WAA application deadline
  • 7 May 2010 –PAMS and IETM Autumn plenary meeting application deadline
  • 3 September 2010 – IPAY, Jan 2011

You may submit travel requests for other key international performing arts markets to any of the deadline dates above but applicants need to contact market development staff before sending in their applications. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to submit their application well in advance so that alternate arrangements can be made should your application not be successful.

Applicants will normally be notified of the results within six (6) weeks of receipt of their complete application.

Applications will not be returned to applicants. If you wish your materials to be returned, please contact Australia Council staff to make alternate arrangements.

Please send four (4) complete unbound hard copies of your application to:
