The Inter-Arts office supports artists to initiate residencies for professional development working in interdisciplinary and hybrid arts.

Applications are encouraged from artists in all states and territories, regardless of where the residency takes place. The Inter-Arts office will support artist-initiated residencies with $20,000.

You may propose residencies with a host of your choice. Residencies should be three months or more, within the funding constraints of the program.

Before applying, applicants should contact staff to discuss guidelines, eligibility requirements and selection criteria.

Inter-Arts Residences are open to individuals and groups.

To be eligible, you must meet the general eligibility requirements.

Selection criteria

Your application must demonstrate:

  • artistic calibre(primarily assessed on the basis of examples of previous work and artist CV)
  • potential for the residency to contribute to the applicant’s professional development and their work in interdisciplinary and hybrid arts
  • ability to participate in consultative and collaborative situations
  • evidence that the project proposed for the residency period is well planned and achievable.

You must submit all the required support material as part of the application.

All application and support material must be submitted before the closing date, including:

  • a summary of curriculum vitae of all people involved
  • examples of previous work
  • confirmation letters where appropriate.

Please see below for details of required and optional support materials, and note that excess items will not be assessed.

  • Curriculum vitae – you must provide a summary of the CVs for each of the principal artists/artsworkers in the application, up to two A4 pages total (.pdf)
  • Examples of previous work – you must submit material to illustrate your practice and proposal. This provides the Inter-Arts assessment panel with evidence of your past work, and should be relevant to your application and the particular category.

You  must submit ONE example of previous work, which is either::

  • one video file up to five minutes, on a non-authored DVD (Windows Media .wmv, Quicktime .mov or .mp4 format only); OR
  • one audio file up to five minutes (.mp3 -128-144.1kbs/s); OR
  • five images (.jpg); OR
  • five A4 pages of text (.pdf)


Electronic support material files must be no larger than 10mb each to upload with your application. If your video or audio file is larger than 10mb you must send it to us on a non-authored disc, which must be accompanied by the support material print out from your online application. Mailed items must be postmarked no later than the closing date. Please ensure your file uses a standard codec,  is not too large and is PC/Mac compatible.

Authored DVDs will not be accepted as support material.

All application and support material will be distributed electronically to the assessment panel members prior to the assessment meeting. We will not accept support material that does not comply with the recommended formats. Please contact Inter-Arts Office staff if you have any enquiries.

Confirmation letters - to demonstrate the planning and viability of your proposal you must submit appropriate documents (.pdf). This includes letters:

  • confirming the names and availability from any other artists involved
  • confirming relevant organisations or institutions in Australia or overseas relating to the project
  • confirming venues or sites for projects involving the public presentation of a work
  • for residency projects, you must provide a letter from the residency host confirming arrangements, timing and available facilities
  • for applications involving community groups, you must provide letters of support confirming the community’s full understanding of the proposal and willingness to work with the nominated personnel
  • for applications for projects containing representations of artistic/cultural practice or intended outcomes relating to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists or communities, you must provide letters from relevant communities or artists. In line with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts policy and its underpinning principles, you must show clear evidence of support and agreement for the activities undertaken. In preparing your application, you may wish to consult the Indigenous protocol guides in song, performance, writing, media arts and visual arts.

The assessment panel will be informed of these confirmations but may not see the letters.

Support letters (optional) – you may also provide support letters from peers in the field, organisations, communities or other people relevant to the project. You can submit up to three different support letters, each up to one A4 page (.pdf). These letters can include comments supporting the application or can more fully describe resources being provided by a third party. For example, a mentor proposed in an application might provide a description of what they can offer and how they see a mentor relationship working.

Important information

Any additional material supplied outside these support material guidelines will not be considered in the assessment of your application. If you need assistance in determining the support material you are required to submit or when it must be submitted, please contact Australia Council staff.
