The Australia Council offers a broad range of funding for Australian artists and arts organisations.

Our online guide provides you with comprehensive information about our funding programs and the funding application process. Once you have decided which grant you intend to apply for, you need to check for further grant-specific information such as application and eligibility requirements, and selection criteria. If you have questions after reviewing all the information about a grant category please call us.

Grants

Australia Council grants are available to any practising professional artist or arts worker who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Grants are also available to Australian or overseas organisations for international projects that involve Australian artists and their work. Before applying, you should check the specific eligibility criteria for a particular grant category.

You cannot apply for a grant if:

  • you have not satisfactorily acquitted a previous grant
  • you owe the Australia Council money.

Initiatives

The Council supports a range of short term initiatives. These initiatives are important to the vitality and sustainability of the arts in Australia, and develop audiences for Australian arts.

The Red Ochre Award Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts Individual Awards 31 July 2014

The Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Islander Arts Board established the Red Ochre Award in 1993 to pay tribute to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist who, throughout their lifetime, has made outstanding contributions to the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts, both nationally and internationally.

The Dreaming Award Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts Individual Awards 31 July 2014

This award supports a young artist aged 18–26 years to create a major body of work through mentoring and partnerships, either nationally or internationally. The successful candidate is mentored in his/her chosen discipline (music, dance, theatre, literature, visual art, new media, cultural vibrancy) by another established professional artist or by an arts institution nominated by the artist. In addition, the Australia Council will promote the achievements of the recipient and position him/her within the arts as a person with leadership qualities, to inspire other young artists.

Kirk Robson Award Community partnerships Individual Awards 31 July 2014

This award is named after community arts and cultural development leader, Kirk Robson. It recognises the achievements of young artists and arts workers in community arts and cultural development based on the values of inclusiveness, consensus, self determination, reconciliation and social justice. Artists and arts workers aged 30 and under are eligible to be nominated.

This initiative is a specific government funding program to support major community arts and cultural development projects of excellence that deliver to Community Partnerships priority areas. Proposals must align arts and non-arts partners and identify clear outcomes that extend beyond the life of the project.

FACT Residency Community partnerships Individual; Organisation Residencies 20 December 2013

This three-month residency is located at FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) in Liverpool, UK and is open to individuals and organisations with a strong demonstrated commitment to Community Arts and Cultural Development practice. This opportunity provides an Australian CACD artist/arts worker to undertake a period of work in the UK, accessing important international networks and infrastructure.
