Australia Council congratulates Tracey Moffatt AO on Australia Day honour

    27 January 2016

Celebrated Australian artist Tracey Moffatt has been honoured in this year’s Australia Day honours list with an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO).

This follows the Australia Council’s announcement last month that Ms Moffatt would represent Australia at the 57th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale 2017.

Ms Moffatt has been recognised “for distinguished service to the visual and performing arts as a photographer and film maker, and as a mentor and supporter of, and role model for, Indigenous artists”.

Australia Council Chair Mr Rupert Myer AO congratulated Ms Moffatt on behalf of the Council.

“Tracey Moffatt has been a leading contemporary artist both in Australia and internationally for the past 25 years,” Mr Myer said.

“She has also been an important ambassador for Australian arts and a great role model and inspiration to many Australians.

“The Australia Council is delighted that Tracey has been recognised in this way nationally, and that she will also be an ambassador for Australia internationally at the 2017 Venice Biennale.

“Tracey is the first Australian Indigenous artist to present a solo exhibition in the Australian Pavilion at this prestigious event.

“I have no doubt she will use this global platform to inspire and challenge the art lovers and leading international arts influencers who attend the Biennale.”

Tracey Moffatt is known for her formal and stylistic experimentation in film, photography and video.  Her work draws on the history of cinema, art and photography as well as popular culture and her childhood memories and fantasies.

She has held around 100 solo exhibitions in Europe, the United States and Australia. Some of her films have been selected for the Cannes Film Festival and in 1997, she was invited to exhibit in the Aperto section of the Venice Biennale.

The Officer of the Order of Australia is awarded for distinguished service of a high degree to Australia or humanity at large.
