National Indigenous Art Award
14 August 2007
The Australia Council for the Arts congratulates Dennis Nona, whose 650-kilogram bronze sculpture of a crocodile has won the Telstra National Indigenous Art Award.
Chosen from more than 300 entries, Dennis' sculpture Ubirkubiri depicts a story from Dennis' home: Badu Island. At over 3.5 metres in length, the bronze sculpture of a crocodile with a man clutching a spear on his back helps keep alive the story of Ubirkubiri to be heard by new generations.
Ubikubiri is Dennis Nona's first foray into sculpture after being a finalist in the national awards seven times with his distinctive lino cuts.
The sculpture is on display at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
