The Horizon Foundation, a Prescribed Private Fund (PPF) was established in 2004 by Tracey Steggall, following a corporate career in the UK and Australia.
The Horizon Foundation is a contribution to creating a more just, tolerant and inclusive world. Its aim is to promote and engage in social change, primarily through the arts. It supports projects that are innovative and collaborative, and those who wish to effect long term structural change.
Tracey’s upbringing in a remote part of rural New Zealand led her to see how powerfully opportunity can transform lives, showed the importance of building strong local communities and gave her a deep understanding of the precious nature of the environment we live in. These philosophies form the basis of The Horizon Foundation. In addition, a volunteer role at a women’s centre in Sydney’s Kings Cross has showed Tracey first hand many of the issues facing those who live on the margins.
A mother with two daughters, Tracey believes the Foundation provides a background for her children’s understanding of social issues, the importance of giving back to the community and of providing support and opportunity to those in need.
Projects The Horizon Foundation has supported include:
- a pilot for an after-school program for youth in disadvantaged areas in Western Sydney
- an arts therapy program at Scarba House, Sydney
- Lou’s Place, a women’s centre in Kings Cross, Sydney
- the 2006 Young Black and Deadly performance workshops for Indigenous youth in the wider Sydney region, run by Gadigal Information Services
- the 2007 Sydney Writers Festival
Artsupport Australia has met with Tracey several times to understand the Foundation's interests and priorities, and subsequently to present possible arts projects for its consideration. The Young Black and Deadly performance workshops were an outcome of this, and more proposals are currently in development.
