Yirra Yaakin (meaning 'stand tall' in Noongar language) exists to share Aboriginal stories.

The company was first established in 1993, in response to requests from young Aboriginal people for opportunities to participate in their own youth theatre.

By 2001 Yirra Yaakin was presenting more new work than any other company in WA, with a touring education program for regional schools and communities, and international tours all part of their activities.   In late 2008 the Board refocused the company on  presenting major Indigenous theatre projects to a wide audience. In March 2009 Kyle Morrison was appointed as Artistic Director and a three year program based on general theatre, educational and community touring commenced.

Yirra Yaakin’s work is in constant demand by theatre lovers and communities throughout Australia and across the world. In fifteen years the company has delivered 36 new works, employed over 500 Aboriginal theatre workers and reached over 400,000 audience and participants. It has also kept true to a vision of Aboriginal control and self-determination, ensuring Aboriginal artists and community have a voice in all levels of creation and production.

Servicing multiple needs for Aboriginal stories, experience and a cultural voice presents a constant funding dilemma; and a unique opportunity for philanthropists to contribute to the education and healing that comes with presenting Aboriginal culture to the world.
