Melbourne’s Chamber Made Opera is engaging potential donors with a series of highly personal Living Room Operas. The concept harks back to the old-fashioned practice of patronage. Each work is commissioned by an individual or group of private philanthropists who also provide use of their living room for rehearsals and performances.
The 2010 series was a great success and included the development of a new Australian opera by Alex Garsden based on a story in The New Yorker entitled, The Itch. Commissioned by Sweet Creative, The Itch was performed in Fiona Sweet and Paul Newcomb’s living room in November 2010. The audience response was ‘overwhelming’.
‘People loved the intimacy of seeing a work on a small scale, of being so close to the performers and revelled in the privilege and fascination of entering into a stranger’s home,’ says Artistic Director, David Young, ‘We have people lining up to become involved in the future commissions.’
In 2011, Chamber Made Opera will be presenting at least three new Living Room Operas.
