In 2007 young violist and composer, Glen Donnelly, started chasing a musical dream - with a financial string attached. Accepted at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he was faced with tuition fees and living expenses of more than $70,000 a year.

Undeterred by the challenge, he approached Artsupport Australia which encouraged him to register with the Australia Cultural Fund, a tool of the Australia Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) that enabled him to receive tax-deductible donations. Soon after registering, Glen was interviewed on ABC Classic FM which led to a number of music-lovers offering their support.

‘Artsupport Australia’s mentoring has been crucial to my success with donors,’ says Glen. ‘I have learned more than ever how important the personal connection is with arts philanthropy. Whether it’s a philanthropic foundation or an individual donor, it’s the direct feedback and level of care that moves them to not only support you once, but to keep doing it.’

To date, Glen has raised more than $100,000 through the Australia Cultural Fund and is now studying for a postgraduate masters at the academy while pursuing opportunities in composing.
