For 30 years, the Griffin Theatre Company has been Australia’s new writing theatre. The resident theatre company of the historic SBW Stables Theatre in Darlinghurst Sydney, Griffin dedicates itself to the nurture, presentation and promotion of outstanding Australian playwriting and contemporary theatre.
While Australians love their small theatres and the chance to discover something new, Griffin’s size does limit its capacity to earn. Tickets sales and government support cover only a small percentage of its operating costs. To bridge the gap while keeping ticket prices affordable, Griffin relies on philanthropic support.
Artsupport Australia has mentored Griffin over several years and recently helped it develop two new fund-raising programs to attract a greater level of support.
The Capital Appeal was created to raise funds for the SBW Stables Theatre renovation. To date more than 70 per cent of the $1 million target has been raised with a further $300,000 to be sourced in the next two years.
The Griffin Foundation is also raising funds for The Studio, a new resident artist development program designed to raise $100,000 per annum with a three-year commitment from donors.
Griffin hopes that with increased high level support, it will be able to invest more than ever in the development of new writing for the stage and the presentation of these works at The Stables.
