Festivals are often excluded from consideration by foundations because they are perceived as short-term initiatives.
Thanks to an introduction by Artsupport Australia to the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation (TFFF), the Queensland Music Festival (QMF) has been able to build relationships with other foundations including the John Villiers Trust, the Perpetual Foundation and Ian Potter Foundation. Indeed, all are now currently supporting the QMF’s suite of music education initiatives for Indigenous communities in Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands.
Following the initial introduction, TFFF’s Tim and Gina Fairfax travelled to Charleville in south western Queensland to attend a QMF event entitled The Road We’re On which involved more than 120 locals, many of whom had never performed before. TFFF’s interest in the Charleville community continued with critical funding provided for a local choral project at a time when the community was reeling from major flooding.
‘The funding helped to establish the choir as a going concern and gave the community a positive focus and a reason to come together throughout a difficult time of rebuilding,’ says QMF Director of Development, Simon Buchanan.
‘We are thrilled that representatives of the TFFF will now be attending our major event on Thursday Island in July 2011. Having a foundation partner with such an active interest in our projects has been a great asset beyond monetary value.’
