Mentoring Program

As part of the Australia Council’s Leadership Program, mentoring provides one-on-one professional development for artists and arts workers. The Australia Council for the Arts - Guide to Mentoring is a free resource to enhance a mentoring relationship, while the Mentoring Program is an opportunity for alumni of other Australia Council leadership opportunities.

Mentoring Program

The Mentoring Program is a supported 12 month mentoring relationship for artists and arts workers. This program is open by registration, where at least one half of the mentoring pair is an alumni of an Australia Council Leadership Program. You can enter the program as a mentee or a mentor for the Australia Council to create a mentoring relationship; or you can enter the program with a self-generated mentoring relationship. It is not a requirement that both members of the mentoring pair work in the arts.

It is expected that each mentoring pair will commit to at least 10-12 one hour meetings over the 12 months of the program. While we’d encourage at least some of these meetings to be held in person, we can also provide support for telephone or online sessions.

This program is currently full. It will reopen later this year.

Joanna Maxwell, Mentor:

‘It has been a privilege to be a mentor in the Australia Council mentoring program. The structured support is excellent, so I felt confident at all stages. The training and group sessions were a real bonus, allowing me to learn new skills and discuss my experiences with fellow mentors. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of this program and recommend it as a great experience.'

Leigh Boswell, Mentee:

‘This experience has been nothing short of amazing and I would say it has been one of the most transformative professional development experiences of my life to date. Even though I live in a regional area where opportunities like this are limited, the program has been extremely accessible with the support of the Australia Council. They connected me with the most amazing, generous, thoughtful and giving mentor who has such a never-ending wealth of knowledge in so many areas, it is unbelievable.’

Guide to Mentoring

The Australia Council for the Arts - Guide to Mentoring is designed as a resource for artists or arts workers who are interested in being a mentor or a mentee; it is also for organisations who wish to reflect on their mentoring programs, or establish a new program.

The Guide to Mentoring presents a structure that will enhance a mentoring relationship and personal growth. Importantly, this structure also remains flexible to recognise the uniqueness of each mentoring pair. It clarifies language that can be used by mentors and mentees to discuss their expectations and ambitions, and to aid in keeping the focus on mentoring. It also provides helpful communication and tracking tools to keep the mentorship fully engaged.
