Cinema attendance

About 65 per cent of Australians aged 15 years and over attended the cinema in the 12 months prior to interview, according to a 2005–06 survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Of these people, 54 per cent went to the cinema at least five times in a year.

According to the survey, the older the people, the less likely they are to go to the cinema. About 93 per cent of 15–17 year-olds go the cinema, compared to only 27 per cent of people aged 75 years and over.

More women than men go to the cinema. The survey found that 68 per cent of women compared to 63 per cent of men attended the cinema.

Going to the cinema has remained a popular activity over time, with attendance rates for people aged 18 years and over remaining fairly static between 2002 and 2006.
