Number of public art galleries and holdings

At the end of June 2008, there were 180 public art galleries operating in Australia, holding an estimated 2.8 million artworks, according to a survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

During the 2007-08 financial year, these institutions purchased artworks totalling $83.2 million.
