Performing arts festivals

A 2002-03 Australian Bureau of Statistics survey collected information on performing arts festivals which lasted more than two consecutive days and were either multifaceted or had a primary focus in one of the performing arts genres.

There were 176 such performing arts festivals across Australia, comprising 91 music festivals; 75 multifaceted festivals; and 10 drama, dance or comedy festivals.

On average, these performing arts festivals lasted for eight days.

At these 176 performing arts festivals, there were a total of 29,707 performances. Of these, 2,969 were overseas acts.
