National Crowdfunding Roadshow Resources

The National Crowdfunding Roadshow was a nine-city series of seminars to explore the opportunities in crowdfunding for cultural and creative projects.

In late July and through August Caroline Vu of the Artsupport Australia team and Elliott Bledsoe, Digital Content Officer of the Australia Council travelled to the capital cities and Western Sydney to present seminars to the arts and cultural sector about crowdfunding.

About crowdfunding and the Roadshow

In 2011, 'the crowd' pledged almost $1.5 billion to projects on crowdfunding platforms across the world. Arts and culture have proved a perfect fit for crowdfunding campaigns. Raising small donations from growing online audiences can be a quick and cost effective choice. After her recent successful campaign, singer and musician Amanda Palmer described crowdfunding as "the future". So why are there still so many campaigns on crowdfunding platforms that fail to reach their goal?

The Australia Council for the Arts, led by its philanthropic arm, Artsupport Australia, embarked on a national strategy to explore the opportunities in crowdfunding for cultural and creative projects in 2012. This page puts all of the resources we created as part of the Roadshow together into one place.

Research

Before embarking on the Roadshow, the Australia Council and Artsupport Australia commissioned research undertaken by the Queensland University of Technology's Creative Industries Faculty to identify barriers and motivations associated with pledging to crowdfunding campaigns. A research snapshot is available from this research.
