Government funding of literature
In 2003-04, people in Australia spent a total of $3.4 billion on literature, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This included $1.6 billion on books; $1 billion on newspapers; and $726 million on magazines and comics.
According to the Cultural Ministers Council Statistics Working Group, the Australian Government and state and territory governments contributed a total of $31.5 million towards literature and print media in 2006–07.
The Australian Government Public Lending Right (PLR) scheme makes payments to eligible Australian book creators and publishers on the basis that income is lost as a result of the availability of their books for loan in public lending libraries.
Some 8,866 book creators and publishers received PLR payments in 2006–07, totalling $7.1 million.
Educational Lending Right (ELR) complements PLR and makes payment to eligible Australian book creators and publishers whose books are held in educational lending libraries, including in schools, TAFE institutes and universities.
In 2006–07, 10,438 book creators and publishers received ELR payments totalling $10.4 million.
