COIL Festival partnership, 2016-2018
The Australia Council is partnering with Performance Space 122 (PS122) in New York to feature Australian contemporary performance in their COIL festivals in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
COIL is PS122’s annual performance festival featuring work from New York, across the US and around the world. COIL takes place during the significant January performing arts season in New York. It aligns with events such as the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) Conference, the International Society for Performing Arts (ISPA) Congress, the Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival, American Realness, and Prototype. Due to this substantial array of activity, January in New York is a key performing arts hotspot where international producers and presenters converge to see work, network and build partnerships. Our partnership with PS122 provides a significant showcasing spotlight for Australian artists and arts organisations.
From 2016-2018, PS122’s Artistic Director Vallejo Gantner will curate the selection of Australian works presented in COIL. The festival will feature up to three presentations by Australian contemporary artists and arts organisations at each edition.
In 2016 COIL will present the following Australian works:
- Morphia Series by Melbourne-based performer and choreographer, Helen Herbertson, an intimate and immersive works which examines the self in relation to the surrounding world;
- Back-up Service by Polytoxic, blending experiential live art with pub-style karaoke with a song list that features the best pop culture has to offer; and
- Intimacy by Ranters Theatre, exploring the notion of intimacy unique to when two strangers come together to talk.
