The International Residencies Program enables the artistic and market development of individual artists and groups. Residencies are available for set periods of time in key international locations.

Expressions of interest are now open for two new residency programs in New York.

If you are applying as an individual or group, you must be a practicing artist or arts worker, and an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident. Please check the general eligibility requirements on the Australia Council website.

Selection process

Industry Advisers will review expressions of interest against the selection criteria and make a recommendation to Australia Council staff on which applicants to fund. A representative from each residency provider will be among the Industry Advisers. You will be informed of the outcome of the expression of interest process in early March 2016.

Selection criteria

Industry Advisers will review your application against the following three criteria.

Potential of the artist/artists

Industry Advisers will assess the potential of the artist/artists at the centre of your proposal.  

They may consider:

  • quality of work previously produced
  • artistic merit
  • ability, skills and creative thinking that suggests strong artistic potential
  • public or peer response to work previously produced.


Industry Advisers will assess the viability of your proposal.  

They may consider:

  • skills and artistic ability of the people involved and their relevance to the proposed activity
  • realistic and achievable planning, resource use and evaluation
  • the role of any partners involved, including confirmation of their involvement
  • proposals which involve working with diverse audiences or communities, peers will look for demonstrated cultural competencies and appropriateness.

Impact on career

Industry Advisers will assess the impact the proposed activity will have on your career.  

They may consider:

  • how the proposed activity strengthens your artistic practice
  • the relevance and timeliness of the proposed activity
  • how the proposed  activity enables you to discover and develop new markets, or meet existing market demand
  • how the proposed activity strengthens your capacity as an arts professional.

Support material

Additional material can be submitted to help support your expression of interest. Industry Advisers will review support material to gain an understanding of the quality of your work, and where relevant, the skills and role of other artists or partners involved.

You can submit the following support material with your application:

1. Artistic support material

You can submit up to three URL’s (a website link on the website) to written material, images, video or audio as a recent example of your work. Industry Advisers may review up to:

  • 10 pages of written material
  • 10 images
  • 10 mins of video or audio recording

2.  Additional artist information

You can include a brief bio or curriculum vitae summary of any additional artists involved in your project. All bios should be included as a single document and a maximum of two pages in total.

3.  Letters of support

Where appropriate, you can include up to five letters in support of your proposal. All letters of support should be included as a single document and a maximum of five pages in total.

Click on the ‘SUBMIT AN EOI’ button at the bottom of this page. Expressions of interest must be submitted via the Online System. To apply in the Australia Council's online system, please click on Grants & Grant Reporting and choose Expressions of Interest (EOI).
