Barkly Regional Arts operates in a vast and remote region in the Northern Territory - in an area roughly the same size as Victoria. Barkly works to nurture creative expression in the 13 distinct language and cultural groups in the region.
Barkly Regional Arts was established in 1996 as a networking and resource organisation in response to community needs across the Barkly region in the Northern Territory.
Around 50 per cent of the the region’s population live in Tennant Creek.
This vibrant artistic exchange across the communities of the Barkly are increasing opportunities for economic development, cultural maintenance and community pride.
In 2005 a rehearsal area for local musicians had been established in the Barkly Regional Arts office. By 2006 this had evolved into the fully fledged Winanjjikari Music Centre (WMC).
In 2009 a Barkly Showcase exhibition will be developed for Tandanya (National Aboriginal Cultural Institute) in Adelaide. This will be a showcase of visual arts in the Barkly Region.
