David Stephenson

Photographer David Stephenson is well known for his series of domes, stars and landscapes, which has led him to travel extensively all around the world, including the Arctic and Antarctic. Based in Tasmania since 1982, David is currently Research and Postgraduate Coordinator at the School of Art, University of Tasmania.

During David’s twenty-five year career, he has exhibited regularly in Australia, including recent solo shows at Boutwell Draper Gallery in Sydney, John Buckley Gallery in Melbourne and Carnegie Gallery, Hobart. His work has been shown in group exhibitions across the country, including the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of South Australia. His work will also be included in an upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Internationally David has held solo exhibitions in France, the United States and Scotland and has been shown in group exhibitions in the United States, Russia, and Portugal. His work is represented in many public collections such as the Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York.

In 1993 David participated in an Australia Council Visual Arts Board residency at Besozzo, Italy, where he began the Domes series. In 2007 David was awarded a visual arts board two-year fellowship.

During the fellowship he will create two series of photographs based on the exploration of the sublime. In 2008 he will travel to Europe to photograph Romanesque and Gothic architecture, for the Vaults series.

In the same year, Stephenson will also travel to Central Australia to photograph the desert skies, for the Stars series. The work will be exhibited in Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney, as well as New York, Atlanta and Kansas City, USA. Two books, Vaults and Ocean and Galaxies, will also be published during this period.
