Peter Winkler is recognised as a prominent musician and composer. His career commenced in the 70s with the seminal music-theatre group Pipi Storm and has seen him establish the College of Country Music in Tamworth NSW in 1997 and appointed as the music director for the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Paralympics Games, composing its central theme song and music.
From 1985 to 2004, Peter undertook a music residency program at the Bondi Pavilion Community Cultural Centre. His trail blazing work with young people, people with disabilities, adults, elderly musicians and songwriters resulted in many exemplary recordings of community music and the landmark youth music project The Bondi Youth Wave.
During this period, Peter has worked with REM Theatre, one of Australia’s leading theatre companies producing work for young people, touring nationally and internationally.
Peter is currently the music director of the LATT Children’s Theatre in Seoul, Korea and travels there regularly to create high quality bilingual music and theatre productions. His world music, dance and drama work The Cat That Walked By Himself with Sadari, Korea’s leading children’s theatre company made it’s world premier at the National Theatre of Korea in 2007.
In 1998, Peter was the recipient of the Australia Council’s Ros Bower Award for his outstanding work in community-based arts and music. He has also been a peer advisor to the Australia Council Music Board.
