International Indigenous Choreographic Laboratory
The first of three International cross-cultural choreographic laboratories was held on September 23 at Carriageworks in Sydney, hosted by Marrugeku and Critical Path.
The initial workshop was led by Serge Aime Coulibaly, from Burkina Faso, West Africa who was choreographer for Marrugeku’s Burning Daylight, and Maori performance artist Charles Koroneho. More laboratories will take place in Broome 2010 and Auckland 2011.
Laboratories draw together contemporary choreographers from West Africa and contemporary Indigenous dancers and choreographers from Aotearoa/New Zealand, Western Australia and New South Wales. They will explore new influences and processes in contemporary dance theatre, developed in both remote and urban Indigenous contexts.
This project is supported by the Dance Board Australia Council for the Arts, from Artform Development Category for $42,000; in conjunction with the Department of Culture and the Arts (WA) and Creative NZ.
