Career pathways in media arts
What career pathways are available to media artists? How do emerging and mid-career artists extend their practice and support themselves financially?
The Australia Council spoke to five very different media artists from various disciplines and stages of their careers to find out how they established themselves in the media arts sector.
The artists describe the diverse pathways practitioners may follow in the sector and the different approaches they take to their work. The artists also share their tips for sustaining, developing and funding their artistic practice.
Nigel Helyer is a Sydney-based sculptor and sound artist. He studied design foundation in 1971 at West Sussex College of Arts and Design, UK, and achieved a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in sculpture from the Liverpool College of Art UK; a Masters of Environmental Media from the Royal College of Art UK; and a PhD of Creative Arts from the University of Technology, Sydney.
Emile Zile is an Australian-Latvian media artist based in Melbourne. His practice consists of single-channel video, performance, live video and photography. In 2004, Emile completed a Bachelor of Arts (Media Arts, Honours) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).
Jodi Rose is a sound artist, writer and radio producer, trained in sculpture, performance and installation at the Sydney College of the Arts.
Michelle Glaser is a Perth-based new media artist, freelance curator, writer, and producer. Her artistic practice consists of video art, interactive narrative, and arts science.
