Australia Council theatre initiatives

Outside of the regular grant rounds, the Australia Council's theatre board supports Australian theatre and artists through other projects and initiatives.

These include international, national and regional touring opportunities, to professional development and youth mentorship programs, to cross-cultural residencies.

Managing and Producing Services (MAPS)

The managing and producing services (MAPS) are support structures that produce and manage innovative works across Australia and assist theatre and dance artists to create, present and tour their work. They are supported by the theatre and dance boards of the Australia Council in partnership with the state arts agencies in Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland.

TransLab

TransLab is a cross-cultural residency program providing supportive environments to undertake research and development, experimentation and creative development of new cross-cultural performance projects. It is funded by the theatre board of the Australia Council and is managed by the Performance Space (NSW) and Arts House (VIC).

The residency program provides space, fees, travel, technical and dramaturgical support to participants.

Navigating and negotiating connections

These workshops will provide independent theatre makers with the skills to secure presenting partners for their work. They will help participants map opportunities for their work, and develop planning and negotiation skills. The workshops will be offered in major cities in 2008 and 2009.

Critical Stages

Critical Stages manages tours of high quality independent theatre productions across Australia. It is managed by Darlinghurst Theatre Company and supports theatre artists with touring infrastructure and resources, and presenters with ready access to high quality productions.

National touring initiative for contemporary performance- 'mobile states'

 The national touring initiative for contemporary performance is a jointly funded initiative of the theatre and dance boards and the inter-arts office. Performing Lines has recently won the tender to deliver this initiative via the Mobile States consortium for the next three years 2009- 2012.

In 2009, Mobile States will tour roadkill and lawn (Splintergroup, produced by Dancenorth and Brisbane Powerhouse), and Marrugeku’s Burning Daylight

Past Mobile States tours were:  Branch Nebula’s Paradise City and Dancenorth’s Underground(2008). Back to Back’s small metal objects and Lucy Guerin Inc.’s Love Me (2007); Tanja Liedtke’s Twelfth Floor and version 1.0’s The Wages of Spin (2006);  de Quincey Co’s Nerve 9 and Chamber Made’s Phobia (2005);  and Jenny Kemp’s Still Angela (2004).

German/Australian dramaturg exchange

The German/Australian dramaturg exchange is a six-week residency allowing an Australian dramaturg to undertake professional development with a German theatre company. As part of the exchange a German dramaturg will spend six weeks with the National Play Festival. Funded by the theatre board and Goethe Institute, this initiative is managed by PlayWriting Australia.

SPARK

SPARK is a mentoring program that provides young artists with the opportunity to take part in a nine-month mentorship with an established arts professional; sharing ideas, networks and experiences. It is supported through the Australian Government’s young and emerging artists initiative and is funded by the theatre board, dance board and the community partnerships section of the Australia Council. SPARK is managed by Youth Arts Queensland (YAQ).

Roadwork

Roadwork is a consortium of 17 regional venues across Australia committed to touring adventurous contemporary dance and theatre to regional Australia.  It is supported by the market development section and the theatre and dance boards, and is managed by Performing Lines.

International script strategy

This two-year strategy builds international production opportunities for Australian plays and is funded by the theatre board and market development section of the Australia Council. Managed by PlayWriting Australia, it promotes Australian writing for performance to overseas markets, brokers links between Australians and their international counterparts and advocates for a greater representation of Australian work in international repertoire. Another aspect of the strategy is the development of an online database of Australian plays, managed by the Australian Script Centre.

Playing the world

Playing the world is an initiative of the theatre board and market development section of the Australia Council. The initiative assists Australian theatre artists to reach new audiences overseas and develop international markets. This includes funding for international tours of contemporary Australian theatre productions. Proposals can be made at set dates throughout the year, but should be discussed with theatre staff before submission.
