Soundclash

Freya Berkhout and Alyx Dennison from kyükyü, a newly-formed experimental pop outfit from Sydney, consisting of Freya Berkhout and Alyx Dennison, have received support through the Music Board’s Soundclash initiative.

Their music flirts with classical composition, traditional world music and contemporary music alike, manipulating these styles to create their unique interpretation of popular music. The Soundclash grant will contribute towards the creative development and rehearsal of material for kyü's second release.

Soundclash is a two-year contemporary music initiative that supports the creative development of music which takes risks and demonstrates innovation within the popular music form. In the past ten years, the field of contemporary popular music (pop, rock, hip hop, electronic dance music and other, related modern music forms) has become increasingly hybrid, challenging the boundaries of the form itself. Soundclash addresses these developments by supporting contemporary popular music that demonstrates a strong commitment to experimentation.

Other artists funded in this, the final year of the initiative, include Brisbane’s abstract-folk artist Anonymeye; Collarbones, a musical collage collaboration between Travis Cook and Marcus Whale; and Sydney based experimental-psychedelic rock band Naked on the Vague.

A full list of the successful recipients can be found in the meeting assessment report here.
