Project development labs

Sixteen multi-disciplinary teams undertook five days of intensive project development at residential labs held in Tasmania and Queensland in 2007 as part of Story of the Future.

The LAMP: Story of the future residential labs, held in Tasmania in May and in Queensland in November, developed digital projects with a strong narrative focus for broadband, mobile devices, advanced TV, games consoles virtual environments and beyond.

Project teams were mentored by several high profile professionals working in new media, including:

  • Paul Bennun, director of UK cross platform production company Somethin' Else;
  • Tony Walsh, Canadian creative developer, writer and consultant;
  • Matt Costello, award-winning US games writer, whose previous works included Doom 3 and Pirates of the Carribbean 3;
  • Jackie Turnure, new media writer, producer and AFTRS lecturer.

During the residential, creative teams of up to 3 people (writer, designer and one other creative such as another writer, producer ot sound designer) worked with the mentors to develop the project to the stage where they have a prototype that can be used to pitch their project to publishers, investors, funding agencies, broadcasters and other partners. Digital media producers and commissioning editors from agencies such as ABC Digital TV, Yahoo 7, Nine MSN, the AFC and publishing houses were invited to view the pitches on the last day of the lab.

Some of the projects developed through the labs included:

  • Thursday's Fictions
  • Tell Tales
  • Machine
  • Camp Kilmore

Full lists of participants are available from the Queensland and Tasmanian residential labs.
