Don’t miss out on two very special Australian performances at APAP 2008: Back to Back Theatre’s small metal objects and Australia's Strange Fruit’s Absolute Pearl.

Back to Back Theatre: small metal objects

"small metal objects turns the notion of theatre and the everyday inside out. It is a pure, open-hearted, complex and breathtaking production and a unique meditation on human worth." - Sydney Morning Herald

small metal objects unfolds amidst the high volume pedestrian traffic at Whitehall Ferry Terminal. With individual sets of headphones, the audience is wired in to an intensely personal drama being played out somewhere in the crowd.

Gary and Steve are the kind of men who normally escape notice. But here they play an inadvertent but pivotal role in the night of two ambitious executives they've arranged to meet for a transaction. As the intimacy of their situation develops, small metal objects emerges as a sly and luminous depiction of the everyday issues most take for granted.

Driven by an ensemble of six actors with intellectual disabilities small metal objects defies convention, challenges logic and questions the imperative to be ‘normal’.

Australia's Strange Fruit: Absolute Pearl

Elsie Management present an excerpt of Australia's Strange Fruit's Absolute Pearl, in association with STREB and 500 Clown.

The performers enter an arena and as though compelled through memory or instinct they ascend poles, entering an interface between mortal and immortal realms.

In this moment the pole becomes more than just a piece of apparatus. Its beanstalk like aesthetic creates a metaphoric pathway. With complex choreographic sequencing an inevitable sense of escalation mounts until till we can no longer perceive any further penetration of this upper ether.
